Jonah Keane's desperate attempts to stop his son Caleb leaving the village are set to take a chilling turn as Hollyoaks begins a major new storyline centred around Fabricated or Induced Illness, also known as FDIA.

The storyline begins shortly after Jonah makes a huge family revelation in a last ditch attempt to persuade Caleb not to travel. When the truth fails to change Caleb's mind, Jonah becomes increasingly desperate, setting the stage for a shocking chain of events.

As Debbie's birthday barbecue gets underway, Beth is already feeling overwhelmed after discovering her anxiety medication has disappeared. While the celebrations continue, Caleb suddenly becomes unwell after drinking a milkshake prepared by Jonah.

Doctors are initially left searching for answers, but viewers soon learn the devastating truth. Jonah has secretly been putting medication into Caleb's drinks in an attempt to make him ill, believing it will stop his son from leaving and keep him close to home.

The storyline marks one of Hollyoaks' most serious recent storylines and will explore Fabricated or Induced Illness, a rare but serious form of abuse where a parent or carer deliberately causes or exaggerates illness in someone under their care.

According to the NHS, Fabricated or Induced Illness can involve giving unnecessary medication, making someone appear ill or even deliberately causing symptoms in order to seek medical attention. Although it most commonly affects children, the abuse can continue into later life depending on the circumstances.

Hollyoaks has confirmed it worked closely with specialist organisations while developing the storyline to ensure it is handled as accurately and sensitively as possible. At this stage, viewers only know the opening chapter of the story, with many questions still to be answered as events continue to unfold.

Rebecca Ryan, who plays Beth, has also hinted that her character will become fiercely protective as the truth begins emerging, suggesting the storyline will have lasting consequences for the entire Keane family.

With Jonah's behaviour becoming increasingly alarming, Caleb faces a battle he never saw coming, while those closest to the family remain unaware of the dangerous reality unfolding behind closed doors.
