France Rail Strike Planned Today Threatens Travel Disruption for UK Passengers
A French rail strike is planned for Thursday 5 November. Find out which trains could be affected, the latest disruption warnings and advice for UK passengers.
British travellers heading to France this week could face disrupted rail journeys after four major railway unions called for a national strike on Thursday 5 November 2026.
The industrial action has prompted warnings about possible changes to high-speed, regional and commuter services, with one French region already advising passengers to consider postponing their journeys.
Although the strike has been confirmed, the full extent of cancellations across France has not yet been announced.
Why Are French Rail Workers Striking?
The CGT-Cheminots, UNSA-Ferroviaire, SUD-Rail and CFDT-Cheminots unions have jointly called on railway employees to stop work over wages, staffing shortages and working conditions.
The unions are seeking improvements to pay and employment conditions, alongside greater investment in maintaining France's railway network. The action is scheduled for Thursday 5 November, immediately before the planned introduction of the new TGV M high-speed train between Paris and Marseille on Friday 6 November.
Which French Trains Could Be Affected?
The strike could disrupt SNCF's TGV high-speed services, Intercités long-distance trains and regional TER routes, depending on how many railway employees take part.
Commuter services around Paris may also experience alterations, although passengers should check individual routes rather than assume trains will be cancelled.
The region's Rémi rail operator has advised passengers to postpone non-essential journeys where possible and check revised services before travelling.
Will Eurostar Trains From London Be Cancelled?
The national strike call does not automatically mean Eurostar services between London and Paris will be cancelled, and no blanket suspension has been confirmed.
However, passengers arriving at Paris Gare du Nord before continuing their journeys on French domestic trains may face difficulties if connecting services are withdrawn. This could affect travellers heading onwards to Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux and other destinations served by the French high-speed network.
Anyone travelling through Paris should check both their Eurostar booking and their connecting SNCF journey, particularly where separate tickets have been purchased.
When Will Train Cancellations Be Confirmed?
SNCF normally publishes revised travel information once staffing levels are established, with passengers advised to check their journeys from approximately 48 hours before industrial action.
Passengers whose trains are cancelled should check their ticket conditions for exchanges or refunds before purchasing alternative travel.
Where to Check the Latest Travel Updates
Passengers travelling through France can follow developments through SNCF Connect, while those visiting the Centre-Val de Loire region can check official Rémi rail disruption information.
For journeys from Britain, Eurostar's service information page provides updates on London–Paris trains and any changes affecting its services.
