Emmerdale Samson’s return pushes Matty to breaking point
Samson's return from prison reopens old wounds for Matty, leading to a family clash and a suitcase moment that leaves Moira fearing the worst.
Samson Dingle's return from prison creates immediate tension in Emmerdale as Matty Barton struggles with the prospect of having him back in the family. While Sam and Lydia prepare to welcome Samson home, Matty finds the situation increasingly difficult to cope with.
Sam and Lydia are growing excited about Samson's return and begin looking forward to having him back. Cain is already in a bad mood, however, prompting Sam to hold back from telling him the news straight away.
For Matty, the situation is much harder to deal with. Samson's return reopens painful emotional wounds, and the atmosphere quickly becomes strained as the family tries to work out how everyone is supposed to move forward.
The tension is made worse by a practical problem at home. Matty is staying in the room that Sam and Lydia had intended for Samson, creating another source of disagreement as preparations for his return continue.
Moira becomes involved and clashes with Sam and Lydia as she tries to protect Matty. Her concern only adds to the pressure, with Matty increasingly overwhelmed by everything happening around him.
The situation eventually reaches breaking point when Matty comes downstairs carrying a suitcase. Moira pleads with him, but Matty tells her that she needs to forgive Samson.
It is a striking response considering how strongly Samson's return has affected him. Rather than encouraging Moira to continue the fight, Matty appears determined that she should find a way to move beyond what has happened.
The scenes do not confirm that Matty is leaving permanently, so his longer term plans remain unclear. What is certain is that Samson's return is already forcing the family to confront feelings that have never properly gone away.
For Sam and Lydia, bringing Samson home should be a moment of relief. For Matty and Moira, his return threatens to reopen a chapter they are far from ready to forget.
