Elon Musk Refused to Appear in His New Documentary So the Filmmaker Used AI Instead

Elon Musk declined to sit down for an interview for a major new documentary about his life and influence. So Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney found a very 2026 solution: he created a version of Musk using AI.

The nearly four-hour documentary, Musk, has already screened at the Venice and Toronto film festivals, and Universal is now moving ahead with plans for an international theatrical release.

But one of its most unusual elements is the way Gibney deals with the absence of the man at the center of the entire film.

Rather than simply leaving Musk out, the documentary uses artificial intelligence and CGI to create a simulated version of him on screen.

Why is there an AI Elon Musk in the movie?

Musk declined to participate in the documentary, leaving Gibney without the traditional sit-down interview audiences might expect from such a major profile.

The filmmaker instead uses an AI-assisted recreation built around statements Musk has already made publicly.

The technique combines a CGI avatar with AI-assisted voice technology, allowing the documentary to present Musk’s existing words in a new visual form rather than creating an entirely fictional interview with him.

It’s an unusual example of AI being used not simply for visual effects, but to deal with a very traditional filmmaking problem: what happens when the person your documentary is about refuses to participate?

Will Universal take Musk to theaters?

The documentary has already attracted considerable attention following its festival screenings, including criticism from Musk himself.

Universal confirmed that it remains committed to an international theatrical release and is working through its release plans. Whether that happens remains to be seen.

For Hollywood however, the technique raises an interesting creative question. Documentary makers have always relied on archive footage, narration and reconstruction when subjects are unavailable or unwilling to participate. AI now gives filmmakers another option entirely.

The decision to incorporate AI into Musk therefore isn’t an experimental short from an unknown creator. It’s the technology being used inside a major feature documentary destined for movie theaters.
