Sheila’s decision to target Chelsea and Jordan appears rooted in her loyalty to Gray and her determination to act on his behalf. In upcoming EastEnders scenes, she uses her position as Jordan’s grandmother to get close to the boy before taking him away from the family.

Chelsea has already endured years of suffering because of Gray, but his imprisonment has not ended his attempts to control her. Unable to reach Chelsea directly from behind bars, he appears to have turned to Sheila as the person best placed to gain access to Jordan without immediately raising suspicion.

Sheila’s family connection gives her a powerful advantage. Chelsea may have had concerns about her involvement, but Sheila could still present her interest in Jordan as the natural concern of a grandmother who wanted a relationship with her grandson.

That apparent concern allowed Sheila to remain close enough to watch the family and wait for the right opportunity. Rather than forcing her way into Jordan’s life, she appears to have relied on patience, trust and the belief that she would place his welfare before any loyalty to Gray.

Chelsea eventually becomes increasingly uneasy about Sheila’s behaviour and decides she should no longer look after Jordan. Her instincts prove correct, but her imprisonment means she cannot personally keep Sheila away or control the arrangements being made outside.

The opportunity Sheila needs arrives when Chelsea asks Kim to care for Jordan while she visits Ian. Kim is then distracted by the news that Denise has left hospital, allowing Sheila to offer help at a moment when the family is under pressure.

By stepping in when Kim needs to leave, Sheila makes herself appear useful rather than threatening. Once Jordan is placed in her care, however, she disappears with him and confirms that Chelsea’s suspicions were justified.

Targeting Jordan also gives Gray the most effective way to hurt Chelsea. He knows how deeply she loves her son, and placing the boy in danger allows him to create fear and helplessness while Chelsea remains unable to reach him.

Sheila’s actions suggest that her loyalty to Gray is stronger than any concern she may claim to have for Jordan. Taking her grandson as part of a revenge scheme places the child directly in the middle of a conflict created by adults around him.

There may still be questions over whether Sheila is following Gray’s instructions precisely or whether she has developed motives of her own. Her decision to continue once Jordan is in her care will reveal how far she is willing to go and whether she is capable of reconsidering what Gray has asked her to do.

Gray appears to have chosen Sheila because she could move through Chelsea’s family without attracting the same immediate alarm that another accomplice might cause. Her connection to Jordan gave her access, while Chelsea’s imprisonment and Denise’s health crisis created the distraction needed for the abduction.

The plan also depends on Chelsea feeling isolated. By targeting Jordan while Chelsea is trapped in prison, Gray ensures that she must rely on Denise, Kim and Jack to act for her, increasing the fear that she may not be able to protect her own child.

Sheila may believe she is helping Gray, but her actions could ultimately expose the full extent of his influence from behind bars. If Jack uncovers how the pair communicated, the abduction could become the evidence that proves Gray has continued directing harm against Chelsea.

Whatever Sheila tells herself about her reasons, taking Jordan reveals the truth about her priorities. She has chosen Gray’s demands over her grandson’s safety, leaving Chelsea’s family in a desperate race to bring Jordan home.
