A Spy Mission Goes Wrong When Love Gets in the Way in Mother Russia

Two friends hoping to make money in post-Soviet Russia become involved in espionage and an unexpected romance in Mother Russia, a political comedy making its UK premiere at London's Hampstead Theatre this December.

The production, written by Lauren Yee and directed by Oscar Toeman, has confirmed its full cast ahead of a run from Friday 11 December 2026 until Saturday 30 January 2027, following an earlier production in New York.

A risky business in 1992 Russia

Set in St Petersburg shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Mother Russia follows childhood friends Evgeny and Dimitri as they attempt to find their place in a country adapting to capitalism.

With new commercial opportunities emerging and familiar political structures disappearing, the pair decide that espionage and racketeering might offer a quicker route to financial security than conventional employment.

Their first surveillance assignment involves Katya, a young woman who has spent time living in the West and whose background makes her an intriguing target.

However, the situation becomes more complicated when Evgeny develops feelings for the woman he has been instructed to monitor, creating a conflict between his work and his growing personal attachment.

The resulting story combines political satire with an uncomfortable romantic dilemma, asking whether the apparent freedoms of a new economic system necessarily extend to the people living within it.

Who stars in Mother Russia?

Matthew Tennyson plays Evgeny, with Samuel Creasey portraying his friend Dimitri and Kirsty Rider taking on the role of Katya.

Lucy McCormick completes the four-person cast in the title role of Mother Russia, bringing together performers whose previous work includes productions at Shakespeare's Globe, the Royal Court and the Young Vic.

Creasey has received recognition through the Critics' Circle Theatre Awards, while Tennyson previously appeared at Hampstead Theatre in The Invention of Love.

The new production marks Oscar Toeman's Hampstead Theatre directing debut, following work that includes Double Indemnity, Hundred Feet Tall and Farewell Mr Haffman.

A political comedy with a contemporary connection

Although the story takes place in 1992, the play examines themes that extend beyond its historical setting, including economic inequality, political surveillance and the difficulty of navigating a society undergoing rapid transformation.

Mother Russia received a New York production at Signature Theatre earlier in 2026, with the forthcoming London staging introducing the comedy to British theatre audiences.

When and where can audiences see Mother Russia?

Mother Russia runs at Hampstead Downstairs in London from 11 December 2026 to 30 January 2027, with its official press night scheduled for Thursday 17 December.
