EastEnders newcomer Craig proves exactly why Walford needed another detective
Craig's calm and methodical investigation into Joel's attack is quickly establishing him as one of Walford's most intriguing new arrivals.
EastEnders has introduced a brand new detective to Walford, and it is already becoming clear that Craig Ingram will play a significant role in one of the soap's biggest storylines.
Played by Matthew James-Bailey, Craig arrived recently as DC Craig Ingram, a younger colleague of Jack who is drafted in when Jack's superiors begin questioning whether he can continue balancing the demands of police work while supporting Denise through her cancer treatment. It is a decision that quickly places Craig at the heart of a major investigation close to Albert Square.
Rather than easing into life in Walford, Craig immediately finds himself investigating Joel's attack. As he begins speaking to those closest to the case, it becomes obvious that the mystery is far more complicated than it first appeared.
Craig approaches the investigation differently from many television detectives. Instead of rushing to conclusions, he quietly builds relationships with the people around him, believing that patience and trust are just as valuable as evidence gathered at the scene. That calm approach soon begins paying dividends.
His attention quickly turns towards Amy, whose emotional reactions leave him convinced she knows more than she has admitted. Craig does not immediately treat her as a suspect. Instead, he recognises a frightened young woman struggling with the weight of something she may not feel able to share.
That measured approach reflects the kind of detective Craig appears to be. He watches carefully, listens closely and notices the details others might overlook. A hesitant answer, an anxious expression or an uncomfortable silence all become important pieces of the wider puzzle he is trying to solve.
As the investigation continues, Craig also begins understanding the complicated relationships between Amy, Lily, Avani, Denzel, Barney, Ricky, Nugget and Will. Rather than looking at individuals in isolation, he realises the answers may lie within the dynamics of the friendship group itself.
His arrival also provides an interesting contrast with Jack. While Jack's priorities are understandably divided between his demanding career and supporting Denise through her treatment, Craig is able to dedicate his full attention to the investigation. That allows Jack to step back when necessary while ensuring the case continues moving forward.
The introduction of Craig marks the beginning of a much bigger story for the character. EastEnders has confirmed that he joins the soap as part of a major new storyline unfolding over the coming months, with executive producer Ben Wadey revealing that Craig's presence in Walford forms part of a storyline involving the Branning family.
Speaking about joining the cast, Matthew James-Bailey described landing the role as "a dream come true." He added that EastEnders had been the soundtrack to his childhood and that becoming part of such an iconic programme felt "truly surreal."
Those comments underline the significance of the role, and viewers are already beginning to see why Craig has been introduced. Rather than simply appearing for a single investigation, the character looks set to become an important part of Walford's future, particularly with his links to the Brannings.
With the Joel attack investigation gathering pace and Craig becoming increasingly convinced somebody is hiding the truth, his detective skills are likely to face their biggest test yet. If his instincts prove correct, he could be the officer who finally uncovers what really happened, while also establishing himself as one of Walford's most promising new arrivals.
