EastEnders' Gray Atkins return looms as Chelsea Fox faces fresh fears over Jordan
Gray Atkins may be behind bars, but EastEnders is proving that his legacy still has the power to unsettle Chelsea Fox.
New scenes will see Chelsea placed in a difficult position as Gray’s grandmother Sheila becomes increasingly involved in Jordan’s life. At first, Sheila appears to be offering practical support at a time when Chelsea badly needs it. Jordan is recovering from a serious accident, Denise Fox is focused on her cancer treatment, and the pressure on Chelsea is growing.
What begins as help soon becomes far more complicated. Chelsea has secretly allowed Sheila to support the family financially, but the wider Fox Trueman clan do not know how close Gray’s estranged grandmother has become to Jordan. That secrecy alone makes the situation feel uneasy, especially given everything Chelsea suffered because of Gray.
Chelsea is still living with Gray’s legacy
Gray remains one of EastEnders’ most notorious villains. His abuse of Chantelle Atkins became one of the soap’s most powerful domestic abuse storylines, before his crimes widened and his lies destroyed more lives across Walford.
Chelsea was one of the people pulled into Gray’s false image. She believed she was building a future, only to discover the man she trusted was capable of horrifying deception and violence. Even though Gray was eventually exposed, Chelsea was left to rebuild her life while raising Jordan with that family history always in the background.
That is what makes Sheila’s arrival so complicated. She may not be responsible for Gray’s crimes, but her connection to him is impossible for Chelsea to ignore. Every offer of help comes with emotional weight, because it drags Chelsea back towards a part of her life she has spent years trying to move beyond.
Sheila’s support comes at a vulnerable time
The timing of Sheila’s involvement could not be more sensitive. Denise is in hospital and facing isolation during treatment, leaving Chelsea without the support she would normally rely on. At the same time, Jordan’s rehabilitation is bringing practical and financial challenges that Chelsea cannot easily dismiss.
Sheila appears keen to use that opening. She buys Jordan an expensive wheelchair to help with his recovery, a gesture that leaves Chelsea overwhelmed but also uneasy. It is a difficult position to be in, because rejecting help that benefits her son is not simple.
The problem is that Sheila seems determined to secure a place in Jordan’s life. Chelsea may understand why a great grandmother would want that bond, but she also knows how dangerous misplaced trust can be. After Gray, Chelsea has every reason to question motives, even when they appear generous on the surface.
Gray is returning to EastEnders
The timing of Sheila's arrival is even more interesting given that Gray himself is set to return to EastEnders for a brief stint.
Actor Toby Alexander Smith has reportedly been back filming scenes at the soap's Elstree studios, with Gray expected to reappear for a short run. As the character remains imprisoned, any return is likely to be limited, but it will still place one of Walford's most notorious villains back into the story.
The development adds extra significance to Sheila's arrival. Rather than simply revisiting Gray's legacy, EastEnders appears to be bringing that chapter of Chelsea's life back into focus. Whether Gray's return is connected directly to Jordan, Sheila or another storyline remains unclear, but the timing feels unlikely to be a coincidence.
For Chelsea, the prospect of Gray re-entering her world in any form will be deeply unsettling. She has spent years trying to build a life away from the trauma and devastation he caused. Now, just as she finds herself dealing with Sheila's growing influence over Jordan, Gray's name is once again becoming impossible to avoid.
Even if he only appears briefly, his return has the potential to change the direction of the storyline and raise difficult questions about Jordan's future relationship with his father's side of the family.
Chelsea’s instincts may be right
Chelsea’s doubts intensify when she starts to suspect Sheila is not being completely straight with her. After running into Sheila with Libby, Chelsea invites her over, but the atmosphere shifts when Chelsea begins to feel that something is off.
A row follows over access to Jordan, leading Chelsea to throw Sheila out. That decision may protect her boundaries, but it also risks provoking Sheila, who is left angry and determined not to be pushed aside.
The most interesting part of the storyline is that Sheila may not be a straightforward villain. She could genuinely want to know Jordan after missing out on so much. She may also believe Chelsea is unfairly punishing her for Gray’s actions. However, Chelsea is not wrong to be cautious. Gray’s crimes taught her that charm, money and emotional pressure can hide something far more troubling.
EastEnders is at its best when family drama carries history behind it, and this story does exactly that. Chelsea is not just dealing with an interfering relative. She is dealing with the aftershock of one of the darkest periods of her life, while trying to protect her son and support Denise through her illness.
Whether Sheila proves trustworthy or not, her arrival has already done damage. It has reminded Chelsea that Gray’s shadow has never fully disappeared from Walford.
