Diane Parish is SoaplandTV’s Soap Star Of The Week after another standout period for Denise Fox, a character who remains one of EastEnders’ most important figures almost 20 years after first arriving in Albert Square.

Parish joined EastEnders as Denise Fox in May 2006, arriving alongside daughters Chelsea and Libby Fox. Since then, Denise has become one of the soap’s longest serving and most recognisable characters, appearing in some of the programme’s biggest storylines across multiple eras.

The decision to recognise Parish this week is based not only on her longevity, but on her continued importance to EastEnders and the strength of her recent performances.

Denise has recently found herself at the centre of emotional family drama as she supports Chelsea through a devastating cancer diagnosis. The storyline has explored the impact serious illness can have on an entire family, with Parish portraying Denise’s fear, strength and determination as she attempts to hold her loved ones together during an incredibly difficult period.

For many viewers, the storyline has served as another reminder of Parish’s ability to handle emotionally demanding material. Denise has often been portrayed as the heart of the Fox family, and the current storyline has once again placed her in a position where others look to her for support during a crisis.

It is the latest in a long line of major storylines that have showcased Parish’s versatility as an actress.

Over the years, Denise has survived an abusive relationship with Lucas Johnson, later discovering he was a serial killer. She was held captive while her death was faked, faced homelessness and financial hardship, experienced family tragedy and relationship breakdowns, and more recently became one of the central figures in EastEnders’ landmark 40th anniversary celebrations.

The anniversary storyline saw viewers given the power to decide Denise’s romantic future through EastEnders’ first ever public vote, choosing whether she should reunite with Jack Branning or pursue a future with Ravi Gulati. The storyline placed Parish at the centre of one of the show’s most ambitious audience participation events and demonstrated how significant Denise remains nearly two decades after her debut.

Few current EastEnders characters can claim the same level of longevity. As the programme continues to evolve, Denise remains one of the key links between different generations of characters and storylines. Her ability to fit naturally into both long running family drama and newer story arcs has helped ensure the character remains relevant year after year.

Before joining EastEnders, Parish had already established herself as one of British television’s most respected performers. In 2002, she won the Royal Television Society Award for Best Actress for her role as Lesley Bailey in Babyfather, becoming the first Black actor to win a major Royal Television Society acting award.

Her work has also been recognised through nominations at the British Soap Awards, National Television Awards, TV Choice Awards and Inside Soap Awards throughout her career.

Reflecting on Denise’s major role during EastEnders’ 40th anniversary year, Parish said she felt “blessed” by the material she had been given, particularly in recent years. It is easy to see why. Few soap characters have remained so consistently relevant across such a long period of time.

Soap Star Of The Week is not simply about who has had the biggest storyline. It is about recognising performers who continue to make a lasting impact on their programme. Parish has done exactly that for almost two decades.

While many actors come and go from Albert Square, Denise Fox remains one of the show’s cornerstones. Nearly 20 years after her arrival, she continues to lead major storylines and remains a character viewers care deeply about.

For her recent storyline work, her career achievements and her lasting contribution to EastEnders, Diane Parish is SoaplandTV’s Soap Star Of The Week.
