Dirty Dancing sequel confirms Patrick Swayze will not be brought back using AI
Dirty Dancing producers rule out using AI to recreate Patrick Swayze as Jennifer Grey prepares to return as Baby in the long-awaited sequel.
The producers of the upcoming Dirty Dancing sequel have confirmed that artificial intelligence will not be used to recreate Patrick Swayze, as Jennifer Grey prepares to return to one of cinema’s most beloved romantic stories.
Swayze, who played dance instructor Johnny Castle opposite Grey in the original 1987 film, died from pancreatic cancer in September 2009, aged 57. His performance helped make Dirty Dancing a worldwide success, with the romance between Johnny and Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman becoming one of the film’s most memorable elements.
With Hollywood increasingly experimenting with AI-generated recreations of deceased performers, producer Nina Jacobson has made clear that the sequel will take a different approach.
Patrick Swayze will not be recreated using AI
Speaking at IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking Summit in Los Angeles on 17 October 2026, Jacobson addressed how the production intends to acknowledge Swayze’s absence.
“That’s one of the things that you really have to focus on: how to let people mourn him in a movie,” she explained.
She then offered a direct assurance to audiences concerned about the possible use of artificial intelligence.
“And don’t worry, we won’t be bringing him back with AI.”
The decision comes as filmmakers increasingly explore technology capable of recreating deceased actors using archived photographs, voice recordings and generative AI.
Recent productions have experimented with digital recreations of performers including Val Kilmer and Gene Wilder, raising questions about consent, creative ownership and whether actors should continue appearing in new productions after their deaths.
However, Jacobson’s comments specifically rule out recreating Swayze through AI rather than suggesting the technology will be prohibited throughout the entire production.
The filmmakers have not revealed exactly how Johnny Castle’s absence will be addressed in the sequel’s storyline.
Jennifer Grey returns as Baby
Jennifer Grey will reprise her role as Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman and serve as an executive producer on the new film.
The sequel is set to take place in the 1990s, several decades after the original story, which unfolded during the summer of 1963.
Rather than attempting to recreate the romance between Baby and Johnny, the film will introduce a new generation of characters and a fresh love story.
Grey has previously acknowledged the difficulty of continuing Dirty Dancing without Swayze, whose chemistry with her helped establish the original film as a romantic classic.
Her return will provide a direct connection to the original story while allowing the filmmakers to explore how Baby’s life has developed in the years since audiences last saw her.
Producers want to capture the spirit of the original
Jacobson, who is producing alongside Brad Simpson through their company Color Force, has explained that the creative team wants to preserve the emotional impact of the original film without simply repeating its story.
She highlighted how Dirty Dancing combined romance and entertainment with more challenging subjects, including Penny’s abortion storyline, which was unusual for a mainstream romantic drama at the time.
The screenplay is being written by Kim Rosenstock, whose credits include Dying for Sex, with Lionsgate developing the sequel for a theatrical release.
Although production had previously been targeted to begin in 2026, a confirmed filming start date has not been announced. The film also has no officially confirmed release date or director.
