Could Caleb Miligan help Billy and Dawn escape Joe Tate in Emmerdale?
Caleb Miligan discovers why Billy Fletcher has cleared Joe Tate and becomes involved in his secret plan to leave the village with Dawn before her wedding
Caleb Miligan could become the most important person in Billy Fletcher and Dawn Taylor’s plan to escape Joe Tate. After Billy unexpectedly clears Joe during another police interview, Caleb refuses to accept the decision without discovering what has caused his sudden change of heart.
Billy had previously accused Joe of being responsible for the attack that left him seriously injured. His decision to withdraw that claim frustrates Caleb, who immediately questions why Billy would remove the pressure from Joe when he still believes he was involved.
The truth gives Caleb a much bigger problem than he expected. Billy explains that clearing Joe was a tactical move intended to make him complacent, because he and Dawn are secretly planning to run away from the village together.
Billy believes openly pursuing Joe would make their escape much more difficult. By removing his accusation, he hopes Joe will think the immediate danger has passed and fail to notice what Dawn and Billy are arranging behind his back.
Caleb is now one of the only people who knows what they are planning. That knowledge could make him a vital ally, particularly while Billy is recovering and Dawn remains under the same roof as Joe at Home Farm.
Helping them will not be a simple decision for Caleb, because Joe is his nephew and the plan could split the Tate family apart. However, Caleb’s confrontation with Billy makes it clear that he does not trust Joe’s innocence simply because the police accusation has been withdrawn.
Dawn’s decision to invite Billy to recover at Home Farm creates a possible opportunity for Caleb to assist them. It also increases the likelihood that Joe, Kim Tate or Graham Foster will realise that Billy and Dawn are spending more time together than they are admitting.
Caleb may be able to distract Joe or help Billy make arrangements away from Home Farm. His involvement could also provide Dawn with someone outside the house who understands why she feels unable to tell Joe directly that she wants to leave.
The plan carries considerable personal risk for Caleb if Joe discovers his involvement. Joe may view Billy as the man trying to take Dawn away, but Caleb’s assistance would turn the escape into a betrayal from within his own family.
There is also no guarantee that Caleb will agree with every part of Billy’s approach. Clearing Joe could allow him to avoid further police scrutiny, while Dawn and Billy’s decision to disappear may create new difficulties for the children and everyone left behind.
Billy nevertheless appears to trust Caleb enough to reveal the truth when challenged. That trust suggests Caleb will have a significant role as Dawn and Billy try to leave before her planned marriage to Joe can take place.
Caleb could give them the practical help they need, but becoming involved may force him into another direct conflict with Joe. If their secret is exposed, he may find himself blamed for helping destroy both the wedding and Joe’s future with Dawn.
