Coronation Street's Sally Metcalfe agrees to take in Lucy after Richie's murder charge leaves the teenager with nowhere else to go
Sally Metcalfe is faced with one of the biggest decisions of her life in upcoming Coronation Street scenes after tragedy leaves teenager Lucy without a family to turn to.
When Tim's long lost cousin Richie unexpectedly reappears, Sally has reservations from the beginning. Although she agrees to let him stay for one night after he claims his wife Rachel has thrown him out, she has no idea just how dramatically their lives are about to change.
Everything falls apart after Tim discovers Richie covered in blood at his home. Before long, DS Lisa Connor Swain arrives with the devastating news that Richie has been charged with Rachel's murder, while Lucy has been placed into emergency care.
Lisa carefully explains the situation to Tim and Sally, making sure they understand what has happened and the difficult circumstances Lucy is now facing. The news leaves the couple heartbroken as they realise the teenager has suddenly lost the stability of the only home she has ever known.
Soon afterwards, social services ask whether Tim and Sally would consider becoming Lucy's foster carers. It is a huge commitment, and Sally knows opening their home to a traumatised teenager will change their lives overnight.
Although she has understandable concerns about the challenges ahead, Sally also recognises that Lucy is an innocent victim in the middle of an unimaginable tragedy. Together with Tim, she decides they cannot turn their backs on her when she needs support the most.
Life under the Metcalfe roof proves anything but straightforward. Lucy struggles with nightmares and the emotional impact of losing both parents, while Sally does everything she can to make her feel safe despite knowing there are no easy answers.
As Lucy continues battling her grief, tensions begin to rise and she eventually disappears, leaving Tim and Sally desperately trying to bring her home safely. Their decision to foster Lucy comes from kindness rather than obligation, but it quickly becomes clear that helping her heal will be the greatest challenge they have ever faced.
