Coronation Street Todd Grimshaw Spirals as His Drinking Sparks a Warning
Todd’s drinking begins to worry those closest to him as Glenda delivers a painful warning that pushes their friendship towards a bitter fallout.
Todd Grimshaw’s behaviour is set to cause growing concern in Coronation Street as his drinking intensifies following his return from Thailand, eventually prompting Glenda Shuttleworth to give him a warning he does not want to hear.
Todd appears determined to throw himself back into nights out and distractions after returning to Weatherfield, but there are signs that his drinking is becoming more than simply having fun. Those around him begin to recognise that he could be using alcohol to numb the pain of what he has been through over the past year rather than facing how he really feels.
After another drinking session with Christina, Todd discusses how much he has been boozing with Mary and Glenda. Glenda becomes increasingly worried by what she is seeing and decides to confront him rather than simply watch his behaviour continue.
Her warning is blunt, as she tells Todd that if he carries on as he has been, he risks ending up with no friends. Glenda may be trying to make him understand how his actions are affecting the people around him, but Todd does not take the intervention well.
Instead, he feels humiliated by what she has said and becomes furious with her. Rather than bringing Todd and Glenda closer together, the conversation creates a new divide between them at a moment when Todd arguably needs his friends around him most.
The scenes appear to show a much more vulnerable side to Todd beneath his usual sharp humour and confidence. His determination to keep drinking and going out could be helping him avoid difficult emotions in the short term, but Glenda’s reaction suggests the people closest to him are beginning to notice that something is not right.
With Todd already carrying the emotional weight of a difficult year, the bigger story may not simply be the row with Glenda but whether he eventually acknowledges why he is drinking so heavily. If he continues pushing away the people trying to reach him, Glenda’s uncomfortable warning could become far more significant than either of them initially realises.
