Coronation Street Todd Grimshaw Faces Theo’s Lasting Impact

Todd Grimshaw’s drinking is beginning to concern those closest to him in Coronation Street, with Glenda Shuttleworth eventually warning that his behaviour could leave him without any friends. However, Todd’s current struggles come after an exceptionally traumatic period in his life.

Todd endured months of emotional and physical abuse from Theo Silverton before eventually reporting what had been happening to the police. Their relationship ended, but Todd was given little opportunity to process what he had experienced before Theo was killed.

Sarah Platt went looking for Todd and encountered Theo on the scaffolding outside the corner shop flat. A confrontation followed, with Theo falling to his death after Sarah feared something terrible may have happened to Todd.

Todd was subsequently drawn into the murder investigation himself and questioned over Theo’s death. Although he had not killed Theo, the investigation forced him back into the events surrounding an abusive relationship he was already trying to escape.

Todd has now returned from Thailand and appears determined to keep enjoying himself, but his drinking quickly attracts attention. After another night out with Christina, he admits to Mary and Glenda just how much he has been drinking.

Glenda warns Todd that if he continues treating his friends badly, he could eventually find himself without them. Todd takes the comments badly and feels humiliated, with their friendship soon becoming increasingly strained.

Coronation Street has not stated that Theo’s death is the sole reason for Todd’s drinking, so it would be wrong to make that assumption. However, the abuse, Theo’s death and the murder investigation all provide important context for a character who has been through an enormous amount in a relatively short period.

Todd may have escaped Theo, but the emotional impact of what happened has not necessarily disappeared with him. With his drinking now causing concern and his friendship with Glenda under pressure, Todd appears to be facing another difficult chapter.
