Coronation Street Debbie’s dementia takes heartbreaking turn

Debbie Webster’s dementia storyline takes another heartbreaking turn in upcoming Coronation Street scenes, as her confusion begins to affect some of the most ordinary parts of her day.

Ronnie Bailey offers to handle a supplier meeting for Debbie, but before she prepares to leave, he gently reminds her that she needs to put her shoes on.

However, when Debbie later arrives at the hotel, Ronnie notices that something is wrong. Despite his earlier reminder, she is still wearing her slippers.

When Ronnie points out what has happened, Debbie looks down at her feet in confusion before suggesting that it might be time for them to go home.

It is a small mistake, but one that shows the reality of Debbie’s condition as familiar routines become increasingly difficult. Ronnie does not make a fuss or embarrass her, instead quietly helping Debbie through another moment of uncertainty.

Further scenes show Debbie’s confusion continuing when she returns to the salon and decides to give Bethany Platt a full eighties makeover.

Bethany initially plays along with Debbie, but Maria Connor becomes concerned when Debbie picks up a pair of scissors.

Maria quickly intervenes and comes to Bethany’s rescue. Debbie then looks at the scissors in confusion, seemingly struggling to understand what she was about to do, before becoming overwhelmed and rushing out.

The two incidents show Debbie attempting to carry on with familiar parts of her life while her dementia increasingly disrupts them. From arriving at work in her slippers to becoming confused while holding her salon scissors, things she would previously have done without thinking are becoming more challenging.

For Ronnie and Maria, it also means recognising when Debbie needs help while still allowing her as much independence as possible.

Sue Devaney continues to lead the emotional storyline as Debbie’s dementia progresses, with these latest scenes showing how suddenly confusion can intrude on otherwise everyday moments.
