Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan’s acclaimed new film Josephine is heading to UK cinemas after emerging as one of the biggest discoveries of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
The drama pulled off an impressive double victory at Sundance, winning both the U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic and the Audience Award: U.S. Dramatic.
Written and directed by Beth de Araújo, Josephine centres on eight-year-old Josephine after she witnesses a sexual assault in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Unable to fully process what she has seen, the young girl becomes increasingly fearful and angry as her parents struggle to understand how they can make her feel safe again.
Newcomer Mason Reeves plays Josephine, while Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan star as her parents, Damien and Claire. Rather than approaching the story simply as a crime drama, the film stays close to Josephine’s perspective and explores the lasting effect that witnessing violence has on a child and the family around her.
Josephine became one of Sundance 2026’s standout films when it secured the festival’s two major U.S. dramatic honours. It subsequently travelled to the Berlin International Film Festival, while UK audiences will soon get an opportunity to see why the film generated such a strong response.
Its festival run will then be followed by a full UK and Ireland cinema release through Curzon on 20 November 2026. That puts Josephine in cinemas during one of the busiest periods of the film calendar and gives the Sundance breakout a much wider audience beyond the festival circuit.
Reeves is also beginning to attract significant attention for her debut performance. An awards campaign is already underway for the young actor, with Tatum and Chan also being positioned in supporting categories as Josephine moves into the latter part of the year.
For anyone looking beyond the year’s biggest studio releases, Josephine is increasingly looking like one of 2026’s independent films to keep on the radar. A Sundance double win, an emerging young lead, two major stars and a confirmed UK cinema release give it every chance of becoming far more widely known over the coming months.
