Cape Town to host LGBTQ+ tourism symposium in January 2027

Cape Town is set to host a new LGBTQ+ tourism symposium in January 2027, bringing travel businesses and industry representatives together to discuss how destinations can better welcome LGBTQ+ visitors.
The inaugural Afrigay LGBTQ+ Tourism Growth Symposium will take place on 12 January at Mama Shelter Cape Town. Organised by Afrigay Travel International, the event is designed to help South Africa’s tourism industry understand and develop its approach to LGBTQ+ travellers.
The programme will include industry discussions, panel sessions and a practical Learning Lab focused on tourism readiness. Participants are expected to explore guest experiences, hospitality practices and ways for businesses to improve the service they provide to LGBTQ+ visitors.
The symposium is aimed at a broad range of tourism professionals, including accommodation providers, tour operators, attractions, guides, destination organisations, LGBTQ+-owned businesses and public-sector representatives.

Organisers have positioned the event as a tourism development initiative rather than a Pride celebration. Its stated aim is to move beyond welcoming language and consider the practical steps businesses can take to provide a more inclusive experience.
An evening networking reception is scheduled at The Rockefeller Hotel by Newmark.
Delegates will also have the option of joining a Glitter Trail Peninsula Experience on 13 January, intended to demonstrate how LGBTQ+ travel experiences can combine local storytelling, hospitality and destination activities.
South Africa has the potential to attract LGBTQ+ travellers interested in its cities, landscapes, wildlife and cultural experiences.
However, a destination’s appeal also depends on how confidently visitors can navigate accommodation, transport, activities and interactions with local businesses.

The symposium will provide a space for tourism professionals to consider those issues and discuss opportunities for the sector.
Its longer-term impact will depend on how the ideas raised are translated into practical changes for visitors.
