British Airways launches direct Sri Lanka flights as new winter route begins
British Airways launches direct Gatwick to Sri Lanka flights on 23 October 2026, with three weekly services
British Airways is preparing to launch direct flights between London Gatwick and Colombo on Friday 23 October 2026, offering British holidaymakers another way to reach Sri Lanka during the winter season.
The airline will operate three services each week, with return fares advertised from £524. The seasonal route provides a new option for travellers planning beach holidays, wildlife experiences and cultural trips to the Indian Ocean island.
Flight times and prices
According to British Airways' latest published timetable, flights will depart Gatwick at 4.40pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, arriving in Colombo at 8.35am the following morning.
The return service is scheduled to depart Colombo at 10.35am and arrive at Gatwick at 5pm. Flights will use Boeing 777 aircraft, with economy, premium economy and business class available.
Return fares have been advertised from £524, including taxes and carrier fees, although actual prices will depend on travel dates and availability.
The service is scheduled to operate during the winter season rather than throughout the year.
What makes Sri Lanka worth visiting?
Sri Lanka combines tropical beaches with historic cities, national parks and spectacular inland scenery, making it suitable for holidays that include more than one destination.
Galle, on the island's southwest coast, is known for its historic fort, colonial architecture and coastal setting. Further inland, visitors can explore Sigiriya's ancient rock fortress or travel through the hill country around Ella, where tea plantations and mountain landscapes provide a very different experience.
Wildlife is another major attraction, with national parks offering opportunities to see elephants, crocodiles and numerous bird species. The island's varied geography also means travellers can combine cultural excursions with several days relaxing beside the sea.
Sri Lanka's southwest coast is particularly popular during the British winter, although weather conditions vary considerably between regions.
A taste of Sri Lanka on board
British Airways has also announced a collaboration with London restaurant group Hoppers to celebrate the route's launch.
Passengers travelling in Club World will be offered a special menu inspired by Sri Lankan and South Indian cooking, including dishes featuring coconut, curry leaves and traditional spices.
The collaboration is scheduled to run from 23 October until 30 December, giving business-class passengers a culinary introduction to the destination before they arrive.
For British holidaymakers considering a winter escape, the new service adds another direct connection to a destination known for its beaches, wildlife and cultural attractions.
