Coronation Street’s Brian Packham is left crushed after overhearing Maggie’s brutal verdict on their night together, but is she hiding her feelings?
Brian Packham is left humiliated in Coronation Street when his hopes of a new romance with Maggie take a painful hit following their unexpected night together.
Brian is clearly delighted after spending the night with Maggie and wastes little time making it known that he would like to see her again. What appeared to be an unexpected encounter could potentially become something more, at least as far as Brian is concerned.
Maggie, however, appears determined to play down what happened.
Brian is left crushed when he overhears Maggie discussing their night together and seemingly dismissing the encounter as disappointing. She also gives the impression that she has no intention of repeating it, dealing a painful blow to Brian just as he begins hoping there could be a future for them.
The rejection hits particularly hard because Brian had been so enthusiastic about seeing Maggie again. Rather than discovering that she shares his excitement, he is left believing their night together meant considerably more to him than it did to her.
Yet Maggie’s reaction may not tell the whole story.
Despite what Brian overhears, Maggie later goes to the Rovers and apologises to him. Her decision to seek Brian out suggests she is not entirely comfortable with how things have been left between them and raises the possibility that her dismissive comments were not a true reflection of her feelings.
Glenda also begins to suspect there is something going on between the pair, making it increasingly difficult for Brian and Maggie to brush their unexpected connection aside.
That leaves Brian facing mixed signals. Maggie’s comments appear to close the door on another date, while her later apology suggests their story might not be finished after all.
For Brian, who had already started looking forward to seeing Maggie again, the question is whether he is willing to risk another rejection. Maggie may also have to decide whether she genuinely wants their night together forgotten or whether she has been hiding how she really feels.
What initially looked like an awkward one night encounter could therefore have more consequences than either of them expected, with Brian and Maggie’s surprise connection potentially far from over.
