Apple TV’s Last Seen turns one phone call into a terrifying missing girl mystery

A new thriller has arrived on Apple TV with a premise designed to keep viewers guessing, as a father receives a phone call that could finally provide an answer to the disappearance that destroyed his life.

Last Seen launched globally on 9 September and stars Patrick Brammall as Ian, a former police detective whose young daughter Maggie disappeared without a trace 11 years earlier. Ian is now working as a police dispatcher, but he has never accepted that his daughter is gone.

Everything changes when a teenage girl makes a distress call and Ian becomes convinced the voice belongs to Maggie. What follows sends him back into the mystery he has spent more than a decade unable to escape, with the possibility that his daughter could still be alive pushing him towards increasingly desperate choices.

That setup gives Last Seen an immediate hook without needing a huge action sequence or supernatural twist. The central question is simple enough to grab viewers quickly, but finding out whether Ian is right could have consequences for everyone around him.

Patrick leads the cast after becoming familiar to viewers through Colin from Accounts, while Maxine Peake joins him following roles including Say Nothing and Black Mirror. Brendan, Daniel, Zahra, Jessica, Tobias and newcomer Chloe are also part of the ensemble.

The six episode thriller is based on Ryan David Jahn’s novel The Dispatcher and has been adapted by Kris. Christian directs and executive produces the series, which was filmed entirely in Victoria, Australia.

Rather than dropping every episode at once, Apple TV has given Last Seen a weekly release. The opening two episodes arrived together on 9 September, with another episode following every Wednesday until the finale on 7 October.

That could work particularly well for a mystery built around a missing person. Instead of viewers immediately reaching the final answer, theories about Maggie, the phone call and exactly what happened 11 years earlier can develop as the investigation moves forward.

With a missing child mystery, a father who refuses to give up and a phone call that could either save him or completely unravel him, Last Seen has all the ingredients for a strong weekly thriller. Its short six episode run also makes it an easy series to start while the mystery is still unfolding.
