AI Actress Tilly Norwood Has an Unexpected Moment With Piers Morgan

AI actress Tilly Norwood had an unexpected moment during an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored on Friday, September 18, when she suddenly switched from English to Cantonese.

Tilly appeared alongside Oppenheimer actor Tom Conti for a discussion about AI performers and her upcoming feature film Misaligned, with the interview released through Piers Morgan Uncensored on YouTube.

During a discussion about whether Tilly’s co-stars were real people or computer-generated performers, she explained that the production uses digital twins. Midway through her next response, however, she unexpectedly changed languages.

Tilly takes the moment in her stride

Piers immediately noticed the switch and asked what had happened. Tilly apologised and described it as a “little hiccup”, joking that her wires sometimes get crossed.

Her creator Eline van der Velden also took the moment in good humour, suggesting Tilly may simply have wanted to demonstrate her ability to speak different languages.

It provided an entertaining example of what can happen when an AI character moves beyond carefully produced videos and has to respond to questions in real time.

Tilly’s journey continues

Tilly was created by British production company Particle6 and has quickly become one of the most recognisable virtual performers exploring what AI could bring to entertainment.

SoapLandTV has previously spoken with Eline about Tilly and the ideas behind her creation, and the project has continued developing since then.

Her next major step is Misaligned, which combines digital performers with real writers, directors and editors.

Tilly’s latest appearance also showed something familiar about interviews, whether the guest is human or AI. Sometimes things simply don’t go according to plan.
