Who Is Rita in Rural Crime Unit and Who Plays Her

Rural Crime Unit brings a new Australian police partnership to ABC in 2027, with Morgana O'Reilly playing Rita, a seasoned local officer who knows the community and its secrets.

She works alongside Nick, a newcomer from the city played by Philip Lynch, while trying to separate her investigations from the influence of her formidable mother. The six-part series promises unusual local crimes and a mystery rooted in the past.

Who Is Rita in Rural Crime Unit?

Rita is a local police officer in the fictional town of Gundawarra, where long-standing relationships can complicate even a straightforward investigation. She understands the community in ways Nick, newly arrived from the city, does not.

Their different perspectives shape the partnership as they investigate missing livestock, crop circles and industrial theft.

A more personal challenge comes from Rita's mother Jolene, played by Rebecca Gibney. Jolene runs a successful trucking business and has considerable influence in town, but her attempts to protect Rita can interfere with the independence her daughter's job requires.

The tension between family loyalty and responsibility gives Rita problems that police work alone cannot resolve.

Who Plays Rita?

Morgana O'Reilly portrays Rita and leads the series alongside Gibney and Lynch. The New Zealand performer is known internationally for The White Lotus, Housebound and Friends Like Her.

ABC has confirmed the role, although detailed information about Rita's romantic storylines has not been released.

Gibney is also familiar to fans of Australian rural television. Before Packed to the Rafters and Halifax f.p., she played mechanic Emma Plimpton in The Flying Doctors.

SoaplandTV revisited her earlier series in our feature on how The Flying Doctors became one of Australia's most loved dramas.

What Mysteries Will Rita Investigate?

Alongside the region's unusual crimes, the series follows consequences of a tragedy ten years earlier. ABC has confirmed that this larger mystery will run across all six episodes, but has not disclosed its outcome or explained how everyone in town is involved.

Creators Darren Ashton and Adam Zwar developed the drama, with Ashton and Erin White directing. Northern Pictures is filming the production in South Australia.
