Who is Owen Armstrong in Coronation Street and why is he returning after 11 years?

Coronation Street is bringing Owen Armstrong back to Weatherfield after almost 11 years away, with his return set to revisit some of the soap's most complicated family relationships.

Played by Ian Puleston-Davies, Owen was a major character between 2010 and 2015, known for his fiery temper, controlling personality and determination to protect his daughters. His time on the cobbles included a relationship with Anna, a disastrous business arrangement with Pat Phelan and a difficult history with Gary.

ITV has confirmed that Owen will return in January 2027, moving in with his daughter Izzy and grandson Jake. With Gary currently serving an eight-month prison sentence, Owen's arrival will give him an opportunity to reconnect with his family, although his return could also revive old disagreements.

Who is Owen Armstrong?

Owen first arrived in June 2010 as the father of Izzy and Katy, quickly establishing himself as a successful businessman who was accustomed to getting his own way.

He owned the builders' yard on Victoria Street and employed several familiar residents, including Jason and Gary. Although Owen was fiercely loyal to his daughters, his protective instincts frequently became controlling, particularly when he disapproved of their relationships or personal decisions.

His marriage to Linda had ended years earlier, and Owen raised their daughters largely without her. However, when Linda eventually returned to Weatherfield, it emerged that Owen had prevented her from seeing the girls after discovering her affair, allowing them to believe she had simply abandoned them.

The revelation seriously damaged his relationship with his daughters and exposed how far Owen was prepared to go when he believed he was protecting his family.

Owen's complicated history with Gary and Anna

Owen's connection to Gary stretches back to Gary's relationship with Izzy, with the couple becoming parents to Jake following a surrogacy arrangement involving Tina.

Owen was closely involved in their lives, although his interference sometimes created additional problems. He also began a relationship with Gary's mother Anna, bringing the Armstrong and Windass families together.

For a time, Owen became an important father figure within the wider family, including Anna's adopted daughter Faye. He bought a home for Anna and Faye, while Gary joined his building business and worked alongside him.

However, Owen and Gary frequently clashed, particularly when Gary's impulsive decisions affected the business.

Their already difficult relationship would eventually become entangled in one of Coronation Street's darkest storylines.

How Pat Phelan destroyed Owen's business

Owen's biggest downfall came through his dealings with ruthless businessman Pat Phelan, who manipulated him into investing £80,000 in a property development.

Their relationship had already been difficult following disagreements over unpaid building work, but Pat's behaviour towards Anna made matters considerably worse.

When Gary discovered that Pat had been sexually harassing his mother, he confronted him and struck him with a piece of wood, leaving him unconscious. Unfortunately, the attack was captured on CCTV, giving Pat the opportunity to blackmail Gary and Owen.

Pat threatened to involve the police unless the two men continued working on his development under exploitative conditions, leaving Owen trapped in an increasingly desperate financial situation.

The ordeal became even more distressing when Pat sexually coerced Anna into sleeping with him in exchange for releasing Gary and Owen from the arrangement. His abuse caused lasting damage to the family, while Owen struggled to recover from the financial consequences.

He eventually lost his £80,000 investment, sold the builders' yard and was forced into bankruptcy. The experience also damaged his relationship with Gary, whom he blamed for the confrontation that had allowed Pat to gain control over them.

Why did Owen leave Coronation Street in 2015?

Owen's final months in Weatherfield were marked by the collapse of his business and growing difficulties within his family.

His relationship with Anna had already suffered following the ordeal involving Pat, while Linda's unexpected return created further tensions with Izzy and Katy.

Matters became worse when Faye's pregnancy was discovered. Owen wrongly suspected Craig of being responsible and reacted aggressively, contributing to the breakdown of his relationship with Anna.

With his finances ruined and his family relationships fractured, Owen decided to leave Weatherfield in April 2015. He initially travelled to Portugal before eventually settling in Scotland, leaving behind the street where he had once enjoyed considerable success

Who could Owen's unexpected ally be?

Producer Kate Brooks has confirmed that Owen will form an unexpected alliance when he returns, but ITV has not revealed who will be joining forces with him. The announcement has already prompted speculation among Coronation Street viewers, with several familiar characters being suggested.

Given Owen's history as the former owner of the builders' yard, some fans believe his comeback could involve Gary's business while Gary is serving his prison sentence.

One viewer wondered: "Wonder if he will also take over the builder's yard while Gary is inside."

Another suggested a possible partnership with Ed, commenting: "Could defo see that happening, especially with Ross and maybe him and Ed teaming up in the builders yard, which could be a good or bad thing."

Ed's experience in the building trade would provide an obvious connection to Owen, particularly if he decides to return to the profession that once made him a successful businessman.

Idris has also emerged as a possibility, with another fan writing: "I feel like the most likely one is Ed given that he works in the builders yard or Idris given that he wants to take over the business’ on the street."

Other viewers believe the alliance could be more personal, potentially involving somebody who already has a grievance against Gary.

One fan suggested that Adam could become involved, writing: "Owen returns and he will make Gary's life miserable and I think im getting the feeling that Adam may end up teaming up with Owen to screw Gary's life big time".

Ross has also been mentioned, with another viewer commenting: "Really hope that Owen's alliance isn't with Ross but could see them palling up against Gary".

The suggestions highlight how many directions Owen's return could take. His history with Gary provides a reason for renewed conflict, while his former business interests offer another possible storyline.

What will Owen's return mean for Izzy and Jake?

Owen's decision to move in with Izzy and Jake brings him back into the heart of the family he left behind more than a decade ago.

His return could offer Izzy additional support while Gary is in prison, particularly as Jake continues growing up without his father at home.

However, Owen's history suggests that living together may not always be straightforward. His tendency to interfere in his daughters' lives previously caused serious disagreements, and Izzy is now an adult with a family and responsibilities of her own.

There is also the question of how Jake will respond to having his grandfather around more regularly, particularly given the complicated history between Owen and Gary.

Although Gary's imprisonment means the two men are unlikely to be sharing everyday life in Weatherfield immediately, their past disagreements could become important again once Gary returns home.

For now, Owen's comeback offers an opportunity to revisit the Armstrong family's history while exploring how much the former builder has changed during his years away.

With an unexpected alliance already confirmed and several old relationships waiting to be revisited, Owen's return promises to bring another familiar face back into the lives of Weatherfield's residents.

Coronation Street is available on ITV1 and ITVX.
