Ethan Browne has become one of Home and Away’s most recognisable stars after six years playing Tane Parata, but his journey to Summer Bay was anything but conventional. Before acting became his career, the New Zealand born star had already experienced fatherhood, worked in fitness and built an entirely different professional life in engineering

His decision to finally pursue acting led him to one of Australia’s most prestigious drama schools and, eventually, to Home and Away. Since making his debut in 2020, Ethan has remained a major presence in the soap, but there is much more to his story than Tane Parata.

Who is Ethan Browne?

Ethan Browne is a New Zealand actor of Māori heritage, best known for playing Tane Parata in Home and Away. He joined the long running Australian soap in 2020 alongside Rob Kipa-Williams as Ari Parata and Kawakawa Fox-Reo as Nikau Parata.

Unlike actors who begin pursuing the profession in their teens, Ethan took a very different route. Acting was an ambition, but work and family responsibilities initially took his life in another direction before he eventually decided to give it a serious chance.

Becoming a father at 16

Long before his Home and Away career, Ethan became a father at the age of 16 when his daughter Aaylah was born. Ethan has spoken openly about becoming a dad so young and the responsibilities that came with raising a child while he was still finding his own direction in life.

Fatherhood became an important part of Ethan’s life years before he eventually pursued acting. He went on to work and build a career outside the entertainment industry before deciding to follow his ambition to perform, eventually training as an actor and securing the role of Tane Parata in Home and Away in 2020.

From personal training and engineering to acting

Long before viewers knew him as Tane, Ethan trained as a personal trainer and later established a career in civil engineering. It was a secure professional path, but the ambition to act had not disappeared.

Ethan eventually made the significant decision to change direction and pursue acting properly. That led him to Sydney and the National Institute of Dramatic Art, better known as NIDA, one of Australia’s best known performing arts institutions.

Getting into NIDA represented a major turning point. Ethan was leaving behind an established working life and entering an industry in which he had comparatively little professional experience, but the gamble ultimately paid off.

Ethan’s route into drama school also says plenty about the determination behind his career change. Rather than having followed a conventional path through years of professional acting as a youngster, he arrived with life experience from well beyond the entertainment industry.

His training gave him the opportunity to turn a long held ambition into a genuine profession. It was not long after completing his studies that the role which would introduce him to a huge television audience came along.

Landing Tane Parata in Home and Away

Ethan secured the role of Tane Parata in Home and Away, making his first appearance in 2020. Tane was introduced as the younger brother of Ari Parata and uncle of Nikau, expanding a Māori family that had already begun establishing itself in Summer Bay.

It proved to be Ethan’s breakthrough role. Although the Parata family has changed considerably since those early episodes, Tane has remained in Summer Bay and developed into an established character in his own right.

Ethan has consequently been handed a wide range of material during his six years on the programme, including romance, bereavement, family conflict, fatherhood and major dramatic storylines. The full history of Tane deserves its own character profile, however, because Ethan’s own journey to Home and Away is a very different story.

Six years on Home and Away

By August 2026, Ethan has been part of Home and Away for six years, making Tane one of the familiar faces of the current Summer Bay line up. It is an impressive run for a role that effectively provided Ethan with his major television breakthrough after such a dramatic change of career.

His longevity has also allowed him to grow with Tane. The character viewers see in 2026 carries considerably more responsibility than the man who originally arrived in Summer Bay, while Ethan has gone from a newcomer to an established member of the Home and Away cast.

Ethan Browne away from acting

Away from Home and Away, Ethan has a number of interests that regularly feature on his social media. Fitness remains an important part of his life, with training and martial arts appearing alongside photography, music and occasional glimpses behind the scenes of his work.

Music is another passion, and Ethan has shared posts showing that there is plenty more to him than the character Summer Bay viewers see on screen. His varied interests also reflect the unusual route he took into acting, particularly his earlier experience as a personal trainer before moving into engineering and eventually pursuing the career that brought him to Home and Away.

Ethan can be found on Instagram at @atlas143, where fans can follow his verified account for updates from his life and work. He has also previously warned followers to be careful of fake accounts impersonating him online, after scammers used his name and photographs to contact people across platforms including Instagram, Messenger and Telegram. Ethan made clear that anyone claiming to be privately communicating with fans as him could be a scammer and urged people never to send money to these accounts, making his verified Instagram page the safest place for fans looking for his genuine social media presence.

The unusual road to acting

Before becoming a familiar face in Summer Bay, Ethan’s career took a very different path. He trained as a personal trainer before moving into civil engineering, spending years in an industry far removed from television before deciding to pursue acting professionally.

It was a major career change, but one that ultimately paid off. After training at NIDA, Ethan went on to secure the role of Tane Parata in Home and Away in 2020, beginning what has become a long running role on one of Australia’s best known television dramas and establishing himself as a hugely recognisable member of the Summer Bay cast.

Home and Away airs weekdays on Channel 5 in the UK, with episodes also available to stream on 5. Images: Channel 5 / Seven Network.
