Home and Away is welcoming a familiar face to Australian television, with Wentworth star Nicole da Silva joining the cast as new doctor Amelia Carlisle.

Nicole is best known around the world for her portrayal of Franky Doyle in Wentworth, a character who became one of the most iconic LGBTQ+ figures in modern television. Franky’s relationships, personal journey and emotional storylines helped make her a standout character throughout the prison drama’s run and earned Nicole a dedicated international following.

Now, the actress is swapping Wentworth Correctional Centre for Summer Bay as she takes on the role of Dr Amelia Carlisle.

Amelia arrives in the aftermath of a dramatic shooting storyline and immediately finds herself at the centre of a life or death medical emergency. While details about the character remain closely guarded, her arrival is expected to make a significant impact on the Bay.

For many viewers, Nicole’s casting carries extra significance because of the legacy she created through Franky Doyle. Wentworth was widely praised for its LGBTQ+ representation, with Franky becoming one of Australian television’s most recognisable queer characters.

At present, there has been no confirmation that Amelia Carlisle will be part of any LGBTQ+ storyline in Home and Away. Producers have remained silent on the character’s personal life, leaving viewers to speculate about what the future may hold.

Home and Away has featured LGBTQ+ characters in the past, including Jasmine Delaney’s sister Beth and more recently Eden Fowler’s relationship history, but LGBTQ+ representation has remained relatively limited compared to some other long running soaps.

Nicole’s arrival therefore represents an interesting moment for the series. While Amelia’s sexuality has not been revealed, many viewers will already associate the actress with one of television’s most memorable LGBTQ+ roles.

For now, attention remains firmly on Amelia’s dramatic introduction and the medical crisis that brings her to Summer Bay. However, with Nicole da Silva joining the cast, there is already plenty of interest in where the character’s journey could lead.

Will Amelia become one of Summer Bay’s most important new residents? Could Nicole once again find herself involved in a groundbreaking storyline? And what secrets will Dr Amelia Carlisle bring with her when she arrives in the Bay?
