Was Jodie’s shooting all a dream in Coronation Street?

Coronation Street left Jodie seriously injured following today’s shooting at No.8, but an intriguing fan theory suggests there could be more to the episode than viewers first realised.

From the unusual music to changes in the way scenes were presented, several details have prompted questions about whether everything happened exactly as shown. One particularly interesting suggestion is that Jodie could already be unconscious, with part of the confrontation unfolding inside a dream or coma.

Why was Mr Sandman playing?

One of the biggest clues could be the choice of Mr Sandman, the classic 1954 song made famous by The Chordettes.

Written by Pat Ballard, the song carries two meanings. It refers to dreaming but also tells of someone longing for the perfect romantic partner, asking the mythical Sandman to bring their ideal person into their life.

Both interpretations fit Jodie’s storyline remarkably well.

She has become obsessed with David and convinced herself that taking Shona’s place will finally give her the happiness she desires.

Todays episode even saw Jodie adopting the appearance and behaviour of a traditional 1950s housewife, preparing food for David and attempting to seduce him.

The connection to a song from the same decade adds another interesting layer.

Was the music simply chosen to reflect Jodie’s romantic fantasy, or could its references to dreaming have a deeper significance?

Could Jodie actually be in a coma?

One viewer raised the possibility that the shooting happened differently from what audiences witnessed, suggesting Jodie might already be lying unconscious in hospital.

The fan wondered whether Jodie “was shot by someone else, and that was all her in a coma/dream scenario”.

Their theory highlighted several details, including Jodie changing into a dress that could represent a hospital gown and a smoke alarm potentially echoing the sound of medical equipment.

They also pointed to Jodie speaking about Shona in the past tense and repeated references to what was real and fake.

Another viewer noticed the unusual presentation, highlighting the incidental music, softer transitions between scenes and shifts in the timeline.

Individually, these details could simply be creative decisions, but together they offer an alternative interpretation of Thursday’s episode.

Did Jodie’s shooting really happen?

The confrontation itself saw Jodie attempting to win David over before Shona caught them together.

David subsequently uncovered Jodie’s trinket box, which contained several suspicious belongings, including DS Lisa Swain’s warrant card.

When David threatened to telephone Lisa, Jodie produced a gun.

Shona believed the weapon was fake, but during a struggle to take it away, the gun discharged and struck Jodie in the stomach.

She was left bleeding on the family’s sofa, with her condition uncertain. Interestingly, the mistaken belief that the gun was a replica also fits the wider theme of questioning what is real.

Reports that actress Olivia Frances-Brown has signed a further one-year contract have added to speculation about Jodie’s future, although they do not establish whether the shooting was imagined.

There is currently no confirmation of a dream or coma storyline, and the simplest explanation remains that events unfolded exactly as viewers witnessed.

However, with Mr Sandman, Jodie’s fantasy of finding her perfect partner and the episode’s unusual presentation, the theory certainly gives viewers something to think about.

Coronation Street continues on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
