Traust du mir begins with a murder and an uneasy partnership

Traust du mir? Chapter 1, officially titled The Beginning, introduces Alea Sorn and Nera Vey as they become involved in the investigation into the death of Linn Winterfeld. Their first case immediately creates tension between Nera’s approach to reconstructing memories and Alea’s insistence on facts.

Nera is brought into the investigation

Linn Winterfeld is found dead in her apartment by Elias Rauk, who says he passed a man in the stairwell shortly after a neighbour heard a scream. Both witnesses independently remember one detail: the man was wearing a dark red jacket, but neither can clearly remember his face.

That gap is why Nera is asked to help. She describes her method as reconstructing memories rather than manipulating them, although Alea remains cautious about trusting her approach.

Elias’s account does not quite fit

During the reconstruction, Elias remembers the man stumbling over a damaged stair, but Nera later becomes suspicious of part of his account. When she and Alea return to the scene, they realise Elias could not have seen the damaged step from where he says he was standing.

That creates a new inconsistency in his statement and gives the investigation another problem to solve. It also shows why Alea is reluctant to rely on memory alone when the physical evidence points in another direction.

Tjark Vennert becomes a suspect

The investigation also reveals that Linn had been secretly involved with Tjark Vennert, who has a criminal history, is known for violence and is said to have argued with Linn frequently. Vennert initially claims he was at the cinema when Linn died, giving him what appears to be an alibi.

That alibi soon collapses when a drinks seller says he saw Vennert leave before the film began. By the end of the chapter, Vennert is on the run and the case has become even more complicated.

The episode also hints at a painful history between Alea and Nera connected to an earlier case in which an innocent man nearly faced conviction. The dialogue links that case to a brother, but the transcript alone is not clear enough to assign every line with complete certainty.
