Tom Cruise looks unrecognisable in Digger as UK release date is confirmed

Tom Cruise is preparing to return to cinemas in one of the most unusual roles of his career, swapping the huge action set pieces of Mission: Impossible for a very different kind of disaster movie.

Digger arrives in UK and Irish cinemas on 2 October 2026, with Cruise transformed into eccentric oil tycoon Digger Rockwell.

Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Birdman and The Revenant, Digger is being billed as a dark comedy with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Cruise appears with thinning grey hair, a larger stomach and a completely different appearance from the action hero audiences have become accustomed to seeing.

The story centres on Digger Rockwell, an enormously powerful man whose actions have helped unleash a disaster threatening humanity. He then begins a frantic attempt to prove that he can be the person who saves the world from the catastrophe he helped create.

Rather than another conventional end-of-the-world blockbuster, Iñárritu appears to be using the disaster as the backdrop for something much stranger. The director has described humanity itself as being at the centre of the film’s threat, while the footage released so far mixes ecological destruction, political satire and increasingly surreal comedy.

There has even been speculation online that Digger could secretly be a musical after viewers spotted unusual moments in the trailers, including Cruise standing on a rotating platform surrounded by characters who appeared to be singing.

For Cruise, Digger represents a particularly dramatic change of pace. After decades dominated by action films and huge franchises, the 64-year-old is playing a deliberately exaggerated and deeply flawed character in an original film rather than returning to an established series.
