Paul Schrader Turns to AI Actors After Black Performers Reject Three Guns at Dawn Roles
Paul Schrader plans to use AI generated actors in Three Guns at Dawn after Black performers rejected the film’s three central roles.
Paul Schrader is moving ahead with plans to make Three Guns at Dawn using AI generated actors, giving the long delayed crime film a completely different future.
The filmmaker says artificial intelligence offered a way to revive the project after attempts to cast its three central roles failed.
The film centres on three Black brothers in South Central Los Angeles. Schrader has described the characters as a corrupt police officer, a drug dealer and a serial killer, with the brothers deeply hostile towards one another.
AI replaces the planned human cast
Schrader says the script was previously sent to Black actors, but they did not want to appear in a film where none of the Black characters were portrayed positively.
The project subsequently stalled, before advances in generative AI gave Schrader another option.
He now plans to create AI performers for the roles instead of continuing to seek human actors. That makes Three Guns at Dawn particularly notable at a time when much of the film industry is still debating how artificial intelligence should be used around performers and acting.
Antoine Fuqua had previously been involved with the project, but is no longer attached. The film has now moved towards a very different form, with artificial intelligence at the centre of how Schrader intends to get it made.
If the project, due for release in 2027, reaches production in this form, it could become one of the clearest examples yet of generative AI being used not simply for visual effects, but to replace an intended human cast.
