New trans documentary What Will I Become? explores boyhood and remembrance
What Will I Become? follows filmmakers Lexie Bean and Logan Rozos as they explore trans boyhood and remember two young trans men through personal storytelling.
A new documentary, What Will I Become?, explores transmasculine experiences through the personal histories of its filmmakers and the lives of two young trans men whose stories continue to resonate within their communities.
Directed by Lexie Bean and Logan Rozos, the film follows the pair as they reflect on their own trans boyhoods while exploring the lives and legacies of Blake Brockington and Kyler Prescott. Both were poets, musicians and community advocates who died by suicide in 2015.
Rather than focusing only on loss, the documentary seeks to connect with the lives these young men led, including their creative work, personal struggles and impact on the people around them. It combines the filmmakers' experiences with wider reflections on identity, community and remembrance.
The film received the Amnesty International Film Award at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival. The recognition highlights its exploration of human rights and the experiences of transmasculine people.
Its approach is personal as well as documentary-based. Bean and Rozos use shared storytelling to examine their own experiences and the ways communities remember people whose lives have been shaped by public attention, social pressures and the search for belonging.
The film is part of NewFest, New York's LGBTQ+ film festival. Its virtual screening window runs from 15 to 30 October, with an in-person screening scheduled at BAM Cinemas on 17 October.
The documentary addresses suicide and mental health, but its focus extends beyond the circumstances of the two deaths. By returning to the individuals' lives and contributions, it explores how storytelling can preserve memories and create connections between people with shared experiences.
For audiences interested in LGBTQ+ documentary filmmaking, What Will I Become? offers a close look at transmasculine identity, community and the importance of remembering people as whole individuals rather than defining them by tragedy.
The film is available through NewFest's virtual programme during the festival's October streaming period.
