Netflix reveals Hunting Gary Glitter as journalists chase disgraced star across the world

Gary Glitter had fame, money and the ability to move from country to country. But a group of journalists refused to stop pursuing him.

Now Netflix is telling that story in Hunting Gary Glitter, a new three-part documentary series following the extraordinary international pursuit that took reporters from Cuba to Cambodia and Vietnam as they worked to expose the child sexual abuse concealed behind decades of chart success.

The first trailer has now been released ahead of the series arriving on Netflix on 14 October, revealing a documentary built around not only Glitter’s crimes, but the survivors who spoke out and the people determined to uncover what had happened.

The hunt for Gary Glitter

Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was once one of Britain’s most recognisable pop stars.

The new series traces his downfall and the pursuit that followed, beginning with his conviction in the late 1990s before following the years in which journalists tracked his movements around the world.

It was a story that crossed continents. As Glitter moved between countries, reporters continued searching for him, investigating allegations and attempting to uncover the truth behind the public figure who had once enjoyed enormous fame.

Survivors are central to the documentary too, alongside journalists and legal experts who recount how the case developed and how Glitter was eventually brought back to Britain.

In 2015, Glitter was convicted of attempted rape, unlawful sexual intercourse and indecent assault and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

The first trailer gives a glimpse of the scale of the investigation, with journalists recalling the lengths they went to as the pursuit moved around the world.

Survivors also appear in the series to tell their own stories, shifting the focus beyond Glitter himself and onto the people affected by his crimes and those who helped expose them.

Sebastian Smith directs the documentary, with Voltage TV producing. Smith’s previous Netflix documentary work includes The Devil on Trial and Girl on the Run: The Hunt for America’s Most Wanted Woman.

When is Hunting Gary Glitter on Netflix?

Nearly three decades after the investigation that began Glitter’s spectacular fall from fame, Netflix is returning to the story from a different perspective: the survivors who spoke out and the journalists who simply refused to stop looking for him.
