More Than 8,000 AI-Made Films Enter Huge New Competition as AI Cinema Explodes

More than 8,000 AI-created films from 125 countries have been submitted to the inaugural Astana AI Film Festival, showing just how quickly AI filmmaking is expanding worldwide.

Organisers confirmed 8,067 entries, including 1,395 from the United States, 829 from Kazakhstan and hundreds more from countries including India, China, South Korea and the UK. Combined, the submissions represent more than 100,000 minutes of AI-generated film created by 4,756 filmmakers using more than 80 generative models. 

The festival requires AI to be central to production rather than simply used for minor effects or post-production. Entries are screened for plagiarism and low-quality generated content before around 150 films reach senior selectors, who will eventually choose just 25 finalists. 

There is serious money behind the competition too. The festival has a $1 million prize pool, while a separate $1 million investment fund will support promising AI filmmaking teams after the event. 

Organisers had originally expected around 3,000 submissions, meaning the final total was more than double that prediction. The festival takes place in Astana from 28 September to 1 October as part of Astana AI Week. 

It’s clear AI filmmaking is no longer a tiny experimental niche. Thousands of creators are now producing full AI-led films, with serious prize money and investment starting to build around the format.
