iPhone Duo AI Features Revealed as Apple Launches Its First Foldable iPhone

Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, and while the new dual screen design will grab plenty of attention, some of the biggest changes are happening through artificial intelligence.

Powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, iPhone Duo brings together the latest generation of Apple Intelligence, a new Siri AI experience and several AI powered camera features. Apple is also expanding what its software can do with images, Safari and privacy as it prepares the device for release later this year.

Apple Intelligence takes a bigger role

Apple Intelligence is becoming more deeply integrated across the iPhone experience, with new tools designed to work both on the device and through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system.

Photography is one of the areas getting the biggest update. Spatial Reframing can improve the composition of a photograph after it has already been taken, while Extend can expand an image beyond its original frame and Clean Up has been upgraded for removing unwanted elements.

Image Playground is also getting photorealistic image creation. Apple says future support for the SynthID standard will help users identify images that have been generated or edited using AI, adding another layer of transparency around AI created content.

Siri AI arrives with iOS 27

The new Siri AI will begin rolling out as a beta with iOS 27 on September 14, initially for supported devices using English.

French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support is due to follow in October. Apple Intelligence itself will also become available with iOS 27 on September 14 across a much wider selection of supported languages, including English, Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Privacy continues to form a major part of Apple’s approach. Many AI tasks are processed directly on the device, while more complex requests can use Private Cloud Compute without moving everything permanently into the cloud.

AI comes to the iPhone Duo camera

Apple is also using AI to make the unusual folding design more useful.

A new feature called Smart Take uses on device AI models running on the A20 Pro to analyse a scene in real time. The phone can automatically capture photographs when it detects that subjects are posing, potentially removing the familiar rush to get behind the camera before a timer runs out.

Users can also take higher resolution selfies using the rear cameras while seeing themselves on the outer display. Duo Preview gives the person being photographed a live view of the shot so they can adjust their position and framing.

Apple has even introduced Kid Cue, which can show Peanuts animations on the outer screen to attract a child’s attention towards the camera.

Safari gets an AI powered monitoring tool

Apple Intelligence is extending beyond photos and Siri too. Safari’s new Notify Me feature can monitor webpages for changes such as product restocks and price reductions, then alert users when something has changed.

It is another example of Apple moving its AI tools towards everyday tasks rather than keeping them confined to image generation or voice assistants.

What else does iPhone Duo offer?

The iPhone Duo opens to reveal a 7.6 inch inner Super Retina XDR display, while the closed phone has a 5.4 inch outer display. Both screens support ProMotion and Always On technology, with peak outdoor brightness reaching 3,000 nits.

Apple says the inner display is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display. Apple Pencil support through USB C is also planned for later in the year.

In the US, iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and will be available with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB of storage. Customers in the UK and more than 70 other countries and regions will be able to pre-order from October 16, ahead of availability beginning October 23.

The foldable design may be the headline feature, but Apple is clearly making AI a central part of what makes the iPhone Duo different.

From automatic photography and image editing to Siri, Safari and privacy focused processing, Apple Intelligence is moving much closer to the centre of the everyday iPhone experience.
