iOS 27 Is Here With Siri AI as Apple Brings Its Biggest Intelligence Upgrade to iPhone

Apple’s iOS 27 has officially arrived, bringing a major expansion of artificial intelligence across the iPhone and introducing the new Siri AI. The free update became available on 14 September, with Apple putting its next generation of Apple Intelligence at the centre of the software rather than treating AI as a separate feature.

For compatible iPhones, the update means AI appearing across many of the apps people already use every day. Siri is receiving the biggest transformation, while Photos, Safari, writing tools and Visual Intelligence are also getting new capabilities designed to make the iPhone more aware of what a user is doing and the information already available to them.

Siri AI is the headline iOS 27 upgrade

The new Siri AI is designed to understand personal context, what is currently displayed on screen and information stored across apps including Messages, Mail and Photos. Users can speak or type naturally to Siri, with Apple promising a much more conversational assistant capable of dealing with more complicated requests.

Siri AI can also draw together information from different parts of the iPhone. That could mean finding something mentioned in a message, using information from an email when helping with another task or answering questions about content currently visible on screen.

Apple has also created a dedicated Siri experience where conversations can be revisited across supported devices. Siri AI is initially rolling out in English, with support for additional languages expected to expand later.

Google Gemini is helping power Apple’s new AI

There is another significant part of Apple’s AI upgrade sitting behind the scenes. Apple and Google confirmed in January that the next generation of Apple Foundation Models would be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology.

Those models are helping power future Apple Intelligence features, including the more personalised Siri arriving this year. Apple says Apple Intelligence will continue to operate through a combination of on-device processing and its Private Cloud Compute system, despite Gemini technology forming part of the underlying foundation.

Photos and Safari get smarter

Photos gains new AI editing tools including Spatial Reframing and an upgraded Clean Up feature. Spatial Reframing allows the composition of an existing photograph to be adjusted, while Clean Up can remove unwanted elements from pictures more easily.

Safari is also becoming more intelligent, while Apple Intelligence is being integrated further into writing and productivity features across the operating system. Visual Intelligence has been expanded too, allowing users to interact with and ask questions about what their iPhone can see.

Not every iPhone gets the full AI experience

Although iOS 27 is a wider software update, the advanced Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features require more powerful hardware. Apple says Apple Intelligence in iOS 27 is supported on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, along with iPhone 16 models and later devices.

That means some owners will be able to install iOS 27 without receiving every AI feature advertised alongside it. Availability can also vary by language, region and individual feature as Apple continues the wider rollout.

For Apple, iOS 27 marks a much bigger attempt to make AI part of the normal iPhone experience. Rather than simply adding another chatbot, the company is putting intelligence inside Siri and the apps people already use, making this one of the most significant changes to how the iPhone works in years.
