Instagram Warns AI Influencers: Label Your Account or Risk Losing Reach
Instagram is cracking down on AI influencers with a new AI-generated profile label, with unlabelled accounts at risk of losing reach across recommendations.
Instagram is drawing a much harder line around AI influencers, and creators who fail to identify artificial personalities could soon see their visibility collapse.
The platform has introduced a new “AI-generated profile” label for accounts built around artificial people, while unlabelled profiles detected by Instagram can lose access to recommendations. For creators who rely heavily on Reels, Explore and suggested posts to reach new audiences, that could have a serious effect on growth.
Instagram Is Replacing the AI Creator Label

Instagram announced the change on August 31, replacing its existing “AI creator” wording with the much clearer “AI-generated profile” label.
The new wording is designed to remove any doubt over whether an account belongs to a real person using AI tools or an entirely artificial personality. Creators who simply use AI during their creative process do not automatically need the profile label.
The focus is specifically on accounts where the person presented to followers is AI-generated rather than human.
Unlabelled AI Accounts Could Be Pushed Out of Recommendations

This is where the change becomes much more significant.
Instagram says creators who correctly apply the AI-generated profile label should not see their reach reduced simply because they are using an artificial character. However, accounts featuring AI-generated people that remain unlabelled can be made ineligible for recommendations.
That means their content may stop being surfaced to non-followers through Reels, Explore and suggested posts, cutting off some of the biggest discovery routes available on Instagram.
For AI influencers built around rapid audience growth, losing recommendation traffic could make a dramatic difference.
Instagram Says Creators Will Have Two Ways Back

Accounts flagged by Instagram will be able to check their Account Status and see whether recommendation restrictions have been applied.
Creators can then add the AI-generated profile label and accurately identify the account, or appeal Instagram’s decision if they believe the system has made a mistake. If an appeal succeeds, the profile and its content can become eligible for recommendations again.
Instagram has also acknowledged that its detection systems will not always get every decision right, making the appeal process particularly important as enforcement expands.
The AI Label Could Become Much Harder to Miss
The new disclosure is intended to appear prominently rather than being hidden away inside account settings.
Instagram says the AI-generated profile label can appear directly on a profile and alongside its content when individual posts do not already carry their own AI disclosure. The result should make it considerably harder for an artificial personality to pass unnoticed as a human creator.
The ability to apply the label has already rolled out, while Instagram’s detection of unlabelled AI profiles and notifications to creators is expected to expand over the coming weeks.
AI Influencers Are Entering a Different Era
The change arrives as AI personalities become increasingly polished, commercially valuable and difficult to distinguish from real creators.
Some now operate like conventional influencers, building audiences, appearing in campaigns and developing recognisable online identities. Instagram is not banning that model, but it is making transparency a condition for maintaining full access to the platform’s recommendation system.
That makes this far bigger than a simple wording change. AI influencers can still grow on Instagram, but pretending to be human without disclosure is becoming a much riskier strategy.
