Icelandair Celebrates Pride With LGBTQ+ Flights and a Longstanding Commitment to Inclusion

Iceland has earned a reputation as one of Europe’s most welcoming destinations for LGBTQ+ travellers, and every August the country puts equality and inclusion firmly in the spotlight as Reykjavík Pride takes over the capital.

For Icelandair, however, Pride is far from a new addition to its calendar. The Icelandic airline has a long history of supporting LGBTQ+ visibility, promoting Iceland to queer travellers and featuring same sex couples within its advertising. Today, that commitment includes its colourful Pride Flights, partnerships with LGBTQ+ organisations and a very visible celebration of the community both in the air and on the ground.

As travellers arrive in Iceland during Pride season, the message is clear: the rainbow is very much part of the country’s identity.

Icelandair takes Pride into the skies

Each year, Icelandair aims to operate a special Pride Flight during Reykjavík Pride, bringing some of the celebrations onboard before passengers have even reached Iceland.

The pilots and cabin crew taking part are members or allies of the LGBTQ+ community, while the onboard service gets its own Pride theme. Colourful treats, rainbows and a festive atmosphere help turn an ordinary journey into part of the wider celebration.

It is a relatively simple idea, but also a highly visible one. For international passengers travelling to Reykjavík Pride, their introduction to the event can effectively begin thousands of feet above the Atlantic.

Icelandair describes its workforce as a large and diverse group of people and says it is proud to foster the inclusive spirit associated with Iceland, with an emphasis on equality, diversity and non discrimination.

More than two decades of LGBTQ+ visibility

What makes Icelandair’s Pride activity particularly interesting is just how far back its LGBTQ+ marketing can be traced.

The airline was promoting Pride packages and Iceland as a destination for LGBTQ+ travellers as far back as the early 2000s. Historic campaigns included the memorable line “Now flying to the other side of the rainbow”, while same sex couples subsequently appeared within advertising promoting Iceland and other destinations.

That representation was significant because LGBTQ+ people were not necessarily being presented solely within campaigns specifically aimed at a queer audience. Same sex couples could simply be part of mainstream advertising, presenting their relationships in exactly the same way as heterosexual couples.

More than 20 years later, Icelandair continues to put LGBTQ+ inclusion at the heart of its Pride activity.

Iceland’s journey towards LGBTQ+ equality

The airline’s approach reflects the wider culture of a country that has reached several major LGBTQ+ equality milestones.

Same sex couples gained legal recognition through registered partnerships in 1996, while equal adoption rights followed and same sex marriage became legal in 2010.

Iceland also made international history through former Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir. When she became Prime Minister in 2009, she became the world’s first openly lesbian head of government. After equal marriage was introduced, Jóhanna and her longtime partner Jónína Leósdóttir were among the first same sex couples to marry under the new legislation.

Further reforms have continued since then, including legislation strengthening the rights and legal recognition of transgender and non binary people.

Reykjavík Pride takes over the capital

Every August, Reykjavík Pride brings a packed programme of events to Iceland’s capital.

The celebrations extend far beyond the main parade, with educational events, discussions, entertainment, parties, concerts and community activities traditionally forming part of the programme.

The Pride Parade itself is the centrepiece, drawing huge crowds into Reykjavík before celebrations continue with live entertainment.

For a country with a relatively small population, the scale of public participation is particularly striking. Reykjavík Pride has developed into one of Iceland’s major annual events, attracting LGBTQ+ people, families, allies and visitors from around the world.

Rainbow visibility can also be found well beyond the official Pride celebrations.

Reykjavík’s colourful Rainbow Street has become one of the capital’s most recognisable sights, while rainbow installations and displays can be found elsewhere across Iceland. Even visitors arriving through Keflavík can encounter rainbow themed landmarks.

Supporting Iceland’s LGBTQ+ community

Icelandair celebrates LGBTQ+ inclusion with special Pride Flights during Reykjavík Pride, continuing more than two decades of queer visibility and support.

Icelandair’s relationship with Pride also extends beyond its flights.

The airline has highlighted its partnership with Reykjavík Pride and Samtökin ’78, Iceland’s National Queer Organisation, which has played an important role in campaigning for LGBTQ+ rights and supporting queer people in the country.

Icelandair has also promoted LGBTQ+ experiences for visitors interested in discovering more about Reykjavík’s queer history, connecting modern Pride celebrations with the people, venues and campaigns that helped shape the community.

That combination of tourism, representation and direct involvement with LGBTQ+ organisations gives the airline’s Pride activity considerably more history than a temporary rainbow campaign.

Why Iceland remains a major LGBTQ+ destination

Iceland offers an unusual combination for LGBTQ+ travellers. Reykjavík may be considerably smaller than many European capitals, but its Pride celebration has developed an international reputation, while LGBTQ+ visibility extends throughout the year.

For travellers from the UK, Iceland is also easily accessible, with direct Icelandair connections available from several British airports.

And for those lucky enough to find themselves aboard one of Icelandair’s Pride Flights, the celebrations could start before Reykjavík even appears beneath the aircraft.

After more than two decades of openly promoting LGBTQ+ travellers, representation and Pride, Icelandair’s rainbow credentials have plenty of history behind them. Its Pride Flights are simply the latest colourful chapter in a relationship with Iceland’s LGBTQ+ community that stretches back years.
