Home and Away Zane writes emotional apology to victim Heidi
Home and Away’s Zane confronts the guilt of his past and begins writing an apology to Heidi after admitting he struggles to believe he deserves a second chance.
Zane’s attempts to rebuild his life take a far more serious turn in Home and Away when he begins writing an apology to Heidi, the victim of his past crime. Despite making progress in Summer Bay, Zane admits that the freedom and trust he is receiving have started to leave him questioning whether he deserves any of it.
Before Alf leaves for Martha’s birthday, Marilyn gives him a present for Martha from herself and Zane. Zane immediately struggles with taking credit for the gift and insists that he wants to repay Marilyn, showing once again how uncomfortable he remains with accepting kindness.
Alf also asks Mali to keep an eye on things while he is away and later speaks directly to Zane. He asks him to promise that he will continue doing the right thing, and Zane gives his word
Rather than reassuring him, Alf’s trust appears to weigh heavily on Zane. Once the pair are alone, Marilyn notices he is unsettled and pushes him to explain what is really wrong.
Zane admits that he cannot stop thinking about the person he hurt. While he is living freely, working and being welcomed into a home, Heidi is still left dealing with the consequences of what he did.
That guilt leads Zane to question whether he deserves the second chance Marilyn and others are giving him. He appears unable to reconcile his progress with the knowledge that his victim cannot simply move on because his prison sentence has ended.
Marilyn suggests he try putting those feelings into a letter. Zane initially struggles to begin and admits that no amount of apologies could ever cover the guilt he feels.
Marilyn tells him that may be exactly the right place to start.
Zane finally puts pen to paper and begins writing his apology to Heidi. The decision is deeply personal, but whether sending the letter will help his victim or reopen old wounds remains an uncomfortable question the storyline is only beginning to explore.
