Home and Away Zane reaches huge milestone with his first pay after prison
Home and Away’s Zane reaches an emotional milestone as his first pay arrives, leaving him unsure how to handle a freedom most people take for granted.
Zane reaches another important milestone in Home and Away as he prepares to receive his first pay since rebuilding his life outside prison. What would be an ordinary payday for most people becomes another reminder of just how unfamiliar everyday independence still feels to him.
Leah tells Zane that his wages will soon land in his bank account, but instead of immediately planning what to buy, he is unsure what he is supposed to do with the money. His first instinct is to contribute towards Marilyn’s grocery costs after everything she has done for him.
Marilyn refuses to let that happen and tells Zane he should spend some of the money on himself. She wants him to recognise how hard he has worked and allow himself a small reward rather than immediately feeling indebted to everyone helping him.

The conversation captures how different life outside prison still feels for Zane. Having his own bank account, earning wages and deciding how to spend them are ordinary parts of adulthood that he is effectively learning again from scratch.
Alf also begins helping him with another unfamiliar responsibility when the subject of voting comes up. Zane has never voted before, reinforcing how many parts of normal community life have passed him by.
There are encouraging signs at work too. Marilyn proudly tells Alf that Zane helped calm a difficult situation with a complaining customer, giving further evidence that he is settling into the Diner far better than some initially expected.
Alf has gradually softened towards Zane and appears more willing to offer practical advice rather than simply watch him with suspicion. The shift does not mean complete trust has arrived, but it gives Zane something far more valuable than reluctant tolerance.
His first wage becomes symbolic of everything he has been trying to achieve since arriving. Zane is beginning to earn his own money, build independence and make decisions about a future that finally belongs to him.
