Christmas Rail Closures 2026: Major Disruption Confirmed at Birmingham, London and Heathrow
Christmas rail closures will affect Birmingham New Street, London Paddington, Heathrow and East Anglia. Check confirmed dates and alternative travel arrangements.
Rail passengers travelling across Britain this Christmas face major alterations to their journeys as Network Rail prepares to carry out £152 million of engineering improvements during the festive period.
Birmingham New Street will be closed to trains for five days, while London Paddington faces extended disruption that will affect journeys towards Heathrow Airport, Wales and the West Country.
Additional work in East Anglia will also interrupt services into London, making it particularly important for travellers to check their routes before heading home for Christmas or making airport connections.
Birmingham New Street to Close for Five Days
No trains will run to, from or through Birmingham New Street between Thursday 24 and Monday 28 December 2026, with services scheduled to resume on Tuesday 29 December.
The closure forms part of a £13 million programme to replace ageing overhead electrical equipment, some of which dates back to the 1960s.
Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, West Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway and Transport for Wales will all operate altered services.
Replacement buses will connect Birmingham New Street with Birmingham International and Wolverhampton on selected routes, while trains will continue serving Birmingham Moor Street and Snow Hill.
The New Street station building will remain accessible, including its shops and facilities, although no trains will use its platforms during the closure.
London Paddington Faces Extended Christmas Disruption
Passengers travelling between London, South Wales and the West Country will also face significant changes.
Major engineering work around Dolphin Junction near Slough means Great Western Railway services will be unable to use Paddington until Monday 4 January 2027.
Long-distance trains will instead start or finish at Reading, with some services diverted to London Euston. The engineering programme includes replacing track, renewing overhead electrical equipment and improvements to the junction, with several days needed to complete the work.
Although Paddington will lose its mainline Great Western services, not all trains will be absent throughout the entire period.
What Happens to Heathrow Express and Elizabeth Line Trains?
Heathrow Airport passengers will need to check their connections carefully, particularly between Christmas and New Year.
Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line services between Paddington and Heathrow are scheduled to resume on Thursday 31 December 2026.
However, Elizabeth line trains will not operate west of Heathrow towards Reading until Monday 4 January because of the continuing engineering work.
The central Elizabeth line route to Paddington's underground platforms will remain available outside the usual Christmas Day and Boxing Day shutdown.
This means travellers should not assume that every service using Paddington will return on the same date.
East Anglia and London Liverpool Street Also Affected
Passengers travelling between London and parts of East Anglia face another major closure, with engineering work planned at Forest Gate on the Great Eastern Main Line.
The ten-day project begins on Christmas Day and will interrupt Greater Anglia and Elizabeth line services through the affected section until the early hours of Monday 4 January. However, the route between London Liverpool Street and Cambridge via Stansted Airport is not affected by the Forest Gate work.
Passengers heading to Norwich or other destinations in East Anglia should check the amended schedules before travelling.
When Will Christmas Rail Services Return to Normal?
Most British rail services do not operate on Christmas Day, while Boxing Day services are also extremely limited. Trains may finish earlier than usual on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, regardless of the engineering closures.
Birmingham New Street is scheduled to resume normal train operations on 29 December, with the major Paddington and Great Eastern restrictions continuing into January.
Passengers can check National Rail's Christmas and New Year travel guide for updated schedules and Birmingham New Street's closure arrangements for replacement transport details.
