Home and Away Zane leaves Summer Bay after brutal rejection

Zane’s attempt to build a new life in Summer Bay falls apart in Home and Away as a difficult trial shift at the Diner leaves him feeling more unwanted than ever. After Marilyn fights to get him a chance, Zane ultimately decides that staying is only making life harder for the one person determined to support him.

Marilyn repeatedly urges Leah to reconsider giving Zane work, pointing out that the Diner is constantly busy and could use the extra help. Leah eventually gives in and offers Zane a trial shift, but it quickly becomes clear that she is still deeply uncertain about having him there.

Leah keeps a close eye on Zane and tells him to stick to clearing tables and stocking when she sees him serving a customer. He later hands out the wrong order and is pulled up over the mistake, adding to the pressure he already feels while trying to prove himself.

Things become even more uncomfortable when Leah spots Zane eating a duplicate order during his break and assumes he is responsible for another error. Marilyn quickly corrects her and admits the duplicate order was actually her mistake, leaving Leah guilty for accusing Zane without knowing the full story.

Leah tries to make amends by offering Zane another trial shift, and he initially accepts. However, Zane then overhears Leah telling Marilyn that the only reason he was given the opportunity was as a favour to her, while also admitting she hopes she does not regret it.

The conversation hits Zane hard because it confirms that Marilyn has been putting herself in a difficult position simply to help him. Rather than continue creating tension between her and the people closest to her, he quietly makes a decision about his future.

Zane does not turn up for his next shift and instead leaves Marilyn a goodbye note. He explains that he has decided to leave Summer Bay because he does not want to make her life any harder than he already has.

For Marilyn, the decision is likely to be devastating because she never regarded Zane as a burden. She has repeatedly insisted that he deserves a genuine second chance, but Zane now appears convinced that remaining in the Bay will only create more problems for her.

His sudden departure leaves his fresh start hanging in the balance just as he was beginning to find people willing to accept him. Whether Marilyn can persuade him to return remains uncertain, but Zane has clearly reached the point where rejection feels easier to escape than endure.
