Home and Away Sonny admits Dana unknowingly funded his drug secret
Home and Away’s Sonny makes a devastating money confession as Dana learns cash she loaned him was spent on drugs and he never planned to tell her.
Sonny’s attempt to repair his relationship with Dana becomes even harder in Home and Away when he admits that money she loaned him was actually being spent on drugs. The confession forces Dana to realise that Sonny’s deception was woven into parts of their relationship she thought she could trust.
Dana has already learned that Sonny was involved with steroids, but she now demands complete honesty about how far the lies went. Sonny admits that money borrowed from Remi was used to fund his drug use, before revealing that money from Dana went the same way.
That detail makes the betrayal particularly painful because Dana was unknowingly helping Sonny maintain the secret he was keeping from her. What she believed was financial support for someone she loved was instead being used for something he was determined to hide.
Dana then asks the question Sonny cannot avoid anymore. If she had never overheard the truth, was he ever actually planning to confess?
Sonny admits that his intention was to recover, stop taking drugs and simply never tell her. He appears to believe that eliminating the problem would eventually make the lie irrelevant, but Dana sees it as proof he was prepared to let their wedding begin without her knowing the truth.
The revelation raises a much bigger trust issue than Sonny’s drug use alone. Dana is not simply deciding whether she can support someone through recovery, because she also has to decide whether she can believe the person who deliberately planned to keep her in the dark.
Remi later encourages Dana to consider a second chance by reminding her of the forgiveness she once received from Harper during her own complicated history with drugs. That does not erase what Sonny has done, but it gives Dana another way to look at whether recovery and forgiveness can exist together.
Dana eventually offers Sonny one final opportunity to prove himself. His promise now extends beyond staying away from drugs because he also vows that he will never lie to her again.
That may be the harder promise to keep. Drugs created Sonny’s immediate crisis, but it is the calculated dishonesty around them that has done the deepest damage to his relationship.
