Home and Away: Richie Loses His Police Career and Rejects Abby After Shooting Verdict

Home and Away’s Richie will lose the career he has always wanted before making another painful decision about his relationship with Abby.

In coming scenes due to air in the UK, Richie is called into the police station after the conduct commission reaches its decision over the accidental shooting of David.

Richie had been suspended from duty while the incident was investigated. Although the commission accepts that he did not act with criminal negligence and he will not face charges over the shooting, the consequences for his police career are severe.

Cash informs Richie that his employment with the police has been terminated. He is also told that he will not be allowed to reapply to the force and that his gun licence has been revoked with immediate effect.

The ruling leaves Richie facing an uncertain future, but his attempt to push Abby away suggests that losing his job may not be the only thing he is about to regret.

Richie receives the commission’s decision

Richie’s hearing follows the events surrounding the theft of Justin’s van.

After the stolen vehicle was tracked to a campsite, Richie joined David at the scene. When the suspect became aggressive, Richie panicked and fired his gun.

The bullet accidentally struck David as he attempted to intervene. David survived after being rushed to hospital, but Richie was suspended while the conduct commission considered whether he had any future in the police.

When Cash calls him into the station, Richie admits that he had not expected a decision to arrive so quickly. He prepares himself for the outcome, but Cash does not soften the blow.

Richie is immediately dismissed from the police. The decision also prevents him from trying to rejoin at a later date, bringing a permanent end to the career he had planned for himself.

He asks whether an appeal is possible, but Cash’s response makes it clear that challenging the verdict may not be the best way forward. Cash admits that he does not believe the police force is the right fit for Richie.

Richie is cleared of criminal negligence

The commission’s finding creates a difficult position for Richie.

He has not been found criminally negligent and will not be charged over David’s shooting. He retains his freedom and still has somewhere to live, but neither fact offers him much comfort.

Becoming a police officer was the only future Richie had imagined for himself. With that career now permanently closed to him, he admits that he has no alternative plan.

The emotional weight of the shooting also remains. Richie cannot forget that Jo and Lacey nearly lost their father because of his actions, even though he never intended to hurt David.

His dismissal therefore leaves him dealing with more than unemployment. Richie must find a new direction while carrying the guilt of an incident which could have ended far more seriously.

Abby encourages Richie to begin again

Abigail, played by Hailey Pinto, later finds Richie and tries to help him focus on what he can do next.

She reminds him that she understands what it is like to make mistakes and rebuild a life one day at a time. Abby also points out that the commission did not find him criminally negligent and that he has not been charged.

Her support appears to reach Richie, and the pair begin speaking about the way their relationship ended before the hearing.

Richie apologises for breaking up with Abby, admitting that he was upset and broken at the time. Abby forgives him and, believing he may remain in Summer Bay after all, suggests that they could give their relationship another chance.

For a moment, it appears that Richie’s professional loss could bring him closer to Abby. Instead, he turns her down.

Richie rejects another chance with Abby

Richie tells Abby that he is not good for anyone in his current state and does not want to drag her down with him.

His decision appears to come from guilt and a lack of confidence rather than an absence of feeling. Richie has lost his career, continues to blame himself for David’s injuries and does not believe he can offer Abby a stable relationship.

However, his attempt to protect her only causes more pain.

As Richie walks away, Abby is left heartbroken again. She later tells Mali that being dumped twice by the same man must be some sort of record.

Richie may believe that ending the relationship is the responsible choice, but Abby had already made it clear that she was willing to support him. By deciding what is best for her without accepting that support, he risks losing one of the few people still prepared to help him rebuild.

The commission has closed the door on Richie’s police career, but it has not decided what he does with the rest of his life. That choice now belongs to him.

Whether he finds a new purpose in Summer Bay remains uncertain. What is clear is that Richie has pushed Abby away at the moment when she was offering him a way forward.
