Home and Away’s Mali becomes curious about Zane after witnessing Alf’s guarded reaction during a tense encounter at the Surf Club
Mali becomes drawn into the growing tension surrounding Zane in Home and Away after witnessing a noticeably awkward exchange between him and Alf at the Surf Club.
Zane has already revealed the truth about the crime that sent him to prison, telling Alf and Marilyn that a burglary he committed as a teenager ended with a young girl being badly injured. While Marilyn decides to stand by him, Alf remains far more uneasy and struggles to move past what he has learned.
That discomfort is obvious when Zane later approaches Alf at the Surf Club. Mali notices Alf’s cagey reaction and immediately senses that something is wrong between them.
Until now, the tension around Zane has mostly been contained to Marilyn, Alf, Leah and David. Mali spotting the strained atmosphere brings another Summer Bay resident into the situation, even though he does not yet know the full reason behind Alf’s behaviour.
What makes the moment important is that Zane is trying to build a new life in a close-knit community where people notice when something feels off. Alf does not need to say anything directly for Mali to realise there is a story behind the awkwardness.
For Zane, that could become another challenge. He has already taken the difficult step of admitting what happened in his past, but the reaction from Alf shows that honesty does not automatically mean acceptance.
Mali’s curiosity also suggests that Zane’s history may not remain private for long. As more people begin to notice the tension around him, he could find himself facing fresh questions from residents who know little about what he has been through.
Alf’s caution is rooted in his concern for Marilyn, while Marilyn has already decided that Zane deserves another chance. Mali now finds himself watching that divide from the outside, and his interest could soon pull him further into the situation.
For Zane, the bigger problem is becoming clear. The hardest part of starting again may not be telling the truth about his past, but living with the way other people react once they know it.
