Home and Away David’s secret Amelia plan finally exposed
Home and Away’s Jo and Lacey take matters into their own hands when David’s awkward barbecue with Amelia needs a push towards becoming a real date
Jo and Lacey decide David needs more than a little help in Home and Away when his plan to spend time with Amelia threatens to stall before it has even properly begun. After watching their dad mishandle his feelings repeatedly, the pair quietly engineer the privacy he seems incapable of creating for himself.
David announces that the family is having a mandatory barbecue shortly after discovering Amelia is still in Summer Bay. Jo and Lacey are already suspicious, and Amelia’s unexpected arrival confirms that the gathering has a very obvious second purpose.
Justin notices it too and tries to persuade David to stop hiding behind the barbecue and actually talk to Amelia. David remains glued to the cooking, apparently more confident handling the tongs than confronting the romantic situation he created.
Eventually, Justin gives up and leaves the pair to it. Jo and Lacey soon realise the same thing and invent their own excuses to disappear, transforming the family barbecue into the private date David should probably have arranged from the beginning.
Amelia is not fooled for a second. She knows exactly what the girls are doing, but rather than resist the setup, she uses the opportunity to make David confront the issue directly.
She makes clear that she will not waste her time if he is still unsure. After weeks of mixed signals, Amelia wants certainty rather than another conversation that leaves both of them exactly where they started.
David finally reassures her that moving forward is what they both want. For Jo and Lacey, disappearing from their own barbecue may therefore prove to be one of their more successful interventions.
The humour works because David is normally confident when dealing with far more intimidating situations. Put Amelia in front of him, however, and suddenly his daughters and friends appear to have considerably better instincts than he does.
