Home and Away Alf rejects family trip as Zane responsibilities grow
Home and Away’s Alf turns down a trip for Martha’s birthday after Roo calls, insisting he has too much to deal with in Summer Bay.
Alf makes a surprising decision in Home and Away when Roo invites him away for Martha’s birthday and he immediately refuses to go. With Zane settling into the house and several responsibilities keeping him occupied, Alf insists he has too much happening in Summer Bay to leave.
The call comes after Marilyn and Zane return from work, where Zane has continued making progress at the Diner. Marilyn proudly tells Alf that Zane successfully helped calm a difficult customer, giving him another example of how well the former prisoner is beginning to integrate.
Roo then contacts Alf about travelling to Merimbula for Martha’s birthday. Marilyn is immediately enthusiastic and believes the trip could be a good opportunity for Alf to spend time with family.
Alf dismisses the idea and says there is simply too much for him to take care of in the Bay. His reaction is notable because he has only recently started becoming more involved in Zane’s attempts to rebuild his life.
Earlier, Alf offers Zane advice about getting onto the electoral roll after discovering he has never voted. The conversation gives Alf another insight into how many ordinary experiences Zane missed while spending so much of his life inside prison.
His decision to remain in Summer Bay may therefore say something about how seriously he is now taking the situation at home. Alf began by avoiding Zane wherever possible, but he is increasingly becoming one of the people helping him navigate everyday life.
Marilyn has been waiting for signs that Alf is genuinely softening, and those signs are becoming more difficult to ignore. He may still be cautious, but his behaviour now looks very different from the man who barely wanted to share the same room.
The birthday trip is not presented as something Alf could never reconsider, but his immediate instinct is clear. Right now, he believes there are responsibilities in Summer Bay that need his attention, and Zane has quietly become part of that picture.
