Grimes Makes Film Debut in AI-Generated Sci-Fi Movie

Musician Grimes is making her feature-film debut in Gods Don’t Give Gifts, an ambitious science-fiction movie created using generative artificial intelligence. However, there is an important distinction between her performance and the AI-generated characters attracting controversy elsewhere in the entertainment industry.

Grimes has agreed to the use of her likeness and recorded her own dialogue, allowing filmmakers to recreate her appearance digitally while retaining her real voice. The film is scheduled for a limited US cinema release on 4 December 2026.

Who Does Grimes Play in Gods Don’t Give Gifts?

Grimes plays Zayinth Alda, a wealthy aristocrat living in a futuristic society where human consciousness can be transferred between bodies and memories can be bought and sold.

Her character visits the poorer district of East Cinder in search of a dealer offering dreamspools, experiences that allow people to explore alternative realities.

Director Zack London, known online as Gossip Goblin, developed the role after connecting with Grimes through social media. The musician’s distinctive fashion and visual style also influenced her character’s appearance.

A preview clip released alongside the announcement shows her digitally recreated character interacting with others in the film’s unusual science-fiction world.

How Much of the Film Was Made Using AI?

Gods Don’t Give Gifts is a 107-minute anthology featuring four interconnected stories set in a dystopian future where technology has transformed the relationship between the human body and consciousness.

The production uses generative AI to create characters, environments and elaborate visual sequences, but human contributors remain responsible for the screenplay, direction, performances, sound and editing.

London developed the film with co-writer Jacob Batchelor, working alongside a relatively small production team.

The distinction is particularly relevant to the debate surrounding AI in entertainment. Grimes has participated in the production, rather than having her identity reproduced without her involvement.

The filmmakers believe this approach could become more common, allowing musicians and actors to perform in digitally generated worlds while retaining their own voices.

Could the Film Receive an Oscar Nomination?

Production company Fable is pursuing consideration for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

The Academy’s rules do not automatically exclude films made using generative AI, although the extent of human creative involvement is considered when assessing the work.

The producers have organised screenings for awards voters, but no nomination or confirmation of eligibility has been announced.

Beyond awards recognition, the film will provide an opportunity to assess whether audiences are interested in watching a feature-length production built around AI-generated imagery.
