Emmerdale Serena’s Police Past Draws Ramsden’s Attention

Serena’s former career in the police has been brought back into focus as DS Ramsden continues investigating Caitlin Todd’s death in Emmerdale. After Serena was called in to give a statement, her detailed account quickly attracted attention inside the station and Ramsden was clearly unwilling to simply accept everything she was being told.

Serena arrived to give her statement just as Vanessa Woodfield was leaving after providing her own account. Police are attempting to establish Caitlin’s movements before her death, and Serena was able to describe what she had witnessed in the village in considerable detail.

She told officers that she had heard Vanessa shouting at Caitlin as the doctor got into her car. Serena recalled Vanessa saying, “This isn’t over,” before Caitlin drove away, and explained that she then went to check whether Vanessa was all right.

The level of detail did not go unnoticed. One of the officers commented that Serena’s account was “very thorough”, before a colleague explained: “She used to be police.”

That small exchange adds another interesting layer to Serena’s involvement in the investigation. Her previous policing experience means she understands how statements are taken and the importance of establishing a clear sequence of events, but it could also make Ramsden particularly alert to the way Serena presents her account.

Ramsden’s questioning soon became noticeably more direct. Serena asked whether what she had told police matched the other witness statements, but instead of simply reassuring her, Ramsden turned the question back on her.

Serena was told that her statement did indeed match the others, but Ramsden suggested there could be a very different reason for that. She accused those involved of checking in with each other, raising the possibility that the matching accounts were making her more suspicious rather than less.

The detective then challenged Serena over whether she had lied in her statement. Serena continued to insist she was telling the truth, but Ramsden was clearly unconvinced and ended their exchange with a warning: “Whatever you’re hiding, I will find out.”

Serena’s background could make this developing battle particularly interesting. She knows how police interviews work and may recognise the techniques being used to test her account, while Ramsden appears determined not to be distracted by Serena’s confidence or familiarity with procedure.

There is no suggestion that Serena’s former police career itself makes her suspicious. What matters is that Ramsden believes there may be more behind the matching statements than the witnesses are admitting, and Serena now appears to have become one of the people she is watching particularly closely.

The scenes also reveal more of Ramsden’s investigative style. She is not simply looking for contradictions between statements, but questioning whether accounts that match too neatly might themselves raise concerns about what happened before police became involved.

That leaves Serena in an uncomfortable position. Her detailed statement may initially have appeared helpful, but Ramsden’s reaction suggests the former officer could now face even closer scrutiny as the investigation continues.

With Ramsden openly promising to uncover whatever is being hidden, Serena’s police experience could prove either useful or increasingly difficult for her. The question now is whether she can continue standing by her account as Ramsden keeps applying pressure.
