EastEnders Puts Ross Marshall In An Impossible Position As Joel Returns

Ross Marshall finds himself facing an agonising decision in EastEnders when Joel returns to Walford and threatens to derail his new life with Vicki Fowler.

Ross and Vicki should be enjoying the early days of married life after returning from their honeymoon. Instead, they are immediately confronted with a situation neither of them expected.

Joel's mum Cleo arrives in Walford and announces that she can no longer have their son living with her. Suddenly, responsibility for Joel falls back on Ross.

For Ross, the situation is far from straightforward. Joel is his only son and has recently been released from a Young Offenders Institution. Despite everything that has happened, Ross wants to help him rebuild his life and find a way forward.

However, Vicki's concerns are impossible to ignore. Joel previously attacked her, leaving her hospitalised and causing enormous strain within the family. Vicki had made it clear that she did not want Joel returning to Walford, believing it would place too much pressure on their relationship.

Her position is entirely understandable. While Joel may be trying to move on from his past, the consequences of his actions continue to affect those around him.

Ross therefore finds himself trapped between two people he loves. On one side is his wife, whose fears are rooted in genuine trauma. On the other is his son, who desperately needs support if he is to have any chance of rebuilding his future.

The storyline places Ross at the centre of a difficult emotional conflict. Unlike many soap feuds, there is no obvious right or wrong answer.

Vicki is justified in wanting distance from someone who hurt her. Ross is equally justified in wanting to help his son. The question is whether there is any solution that keeps both relationships intact.

As Joel attempts to settle back into life in Walford, Ross spends much of his time trying to support him. He even attempts to secure Joel a place at the local sixth form, hoping education might offer him a fresh start.

Yet despite Ross's efforts, it quickly becomes clear that Walford has not forgotten Joel's past. His return sparks anger among several local teenagers, many of whom remain furious over what happened to Avani Nandra-Hart.

With tensions rising throughout the Square, Ross's task becomes increasingly difficult.

The situation is made even more complicated by the fact that Joel himself appears aware of how unwanted he is.

Whether Ross can hold his family together remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear. Married life for Ross and Vicki is getting off to a far more complicated start than either of them could have imagined.
