Janine Butcher returns to EastEnders as winter trailer reveals fresh Walford mysteries

EastEnders has confirmed the return of Janine Butcher, with Charlie Brooks making a surprise appearance in the final moments of the BBC soap’s new winter trailer, released on Thursday 29 October 2026.

Janine is seen wearing a red dress and gold jewellery while sitting in what appears to be an office, looking particularly pleased with herself. It is her first appearance since December 2022, although the BBC has yet to reveal exactly when she will return to Walford or what brings her back.

Her appearance closes a trailer filled with family confrontations, revenge plots and an unexplained death certificate, as EastEnders prepares for Christmas and the conclusion of its New Year’s Day flashforward storyline.

Why Janine’s return could be bad news for Linda

Janine was last seen on Boxing Day 2022, when she was arrested for perverting the course of justice following the breakdown of her marriage to Mick Carter.

Her previous stint saw her manipulate Mick and Linda’s relationship, determined to separate the couple and secure Mick for herself. With Mick subsequently disappearing at sea, Janine’s history with the Carter family gives her return particular significance.

Linda is already facing fresh difficulties, and the trailer shows her holding a bottle of alcohol while appearing to contemplate drinking again. Her relationship with Max is also under pressure, particularly when Cindy declares that she cannot wait for Linda to discover who Max really is.

Max faces revenge as the New Year mystery deepens

Max finds himself surrounded by enemies as the soap builds towards the events shown in its New Year’s Day 2026 flashforward, which revealed a glimpse of Walford one year into the future.

The new trailer shows Max being punched by both Jack and Ravi, while Sean confronts him about the occasion when he and Tanya buried Max alive.

Jack is also furious after discovering that Max took £50,000 from Amy’s trust fund, adding another family dispute to the growing number of confrontations involving him.

Meanwhile, Kat tells Alfie that she wants someone dead as she continues searching for answers following Zoe’s death.

Cindy also appears determined to expose Max, while a separate sequence reveals a gun, raising further questions about the violent events awaiting the Branning family.

A mysterious death certificate raises questions

One of the trailer’s most intriguing details is a death certificate dated 29 October 2026, the same day the preview was released.

The document also identifies Finchley in North London as the place of death, although the identity of the deceased has not been established.

Given Janine’s return and Linda’s reaction to a document shown elsewhere in the trailer, questions have already emerged about whether the certificate could be connected to Mick.

Nicola’s Christmas secret and more family trouble

Nicola faces another dramatic confrontation when a struggle with her sister Gemma sends her falling down the steps outside her home.

There is also a potentially explosive Christmas revelation, with Nicola addressing her family and declaring, “Now you all know. Merry Christmas, everyone!”

Elsewhere, Vinny proposes to Penny while questions remain over the paternity of her baby, and Denise tells her family that she wants to stop treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia.

Suki and Eve also appear to face further relationship difficulties, with Eve making an angry remarks about love while Suki is separately shown smashing a glass.

The trailer additionally features Ian and Elaine growing closer, Lauren continuing her affair with Mark, and Sharon confronting an unidentified person.
