EastEnders Linda Carter Christmas Exit Theory: Could Janine Butcher Be Involved?

Kellie Bright’s decision to leave EastEnders after 13 years has immediately raised one huge question: how will Linda Carter actually leave Walford?

EastEnders has confirmed that Kellie’s departure is still some way off and that Linda has a major storyline ahead of her. With the character also appearing in the flashforward to New Year’s Day 2027, could the BBC be building towards a huge festive farewell?

And with Janine Butcher returning to the EastEnders story, there is one particularly intriguing possibility: could Linda and Janine be heading towards one final confrontation?

Nothing has been confirmed connecting Janine to Linda’s departure, so for now this remains a theory. However, their history gives EastEnders plenty to revisit if the two characters are brought back into each other’s orbit.

Linda and Janine’s feud became one of the biggest stories of Mick Carter’s final year in Walford. Janine became involved with Mick as his marriage to Linda collapsed, while her manipulation and lies drove an increasingly bitter divide between the former couple.

The story eventually reached its dramatic climax at Christmas 2022. After the truth about Janine was exposed, Mick pursued her and Linda to the coast, where events ended with Mick disappearing at sea after attempting to save Linda.

Mick was presumed dead, while Janine subsequently faced the consequences of her actions. For Linda, however, losing Mick became another defining moment in her life.

That history means a Janine and Linda reunion would carry far more weight than simply bringing two familiar characters together.

Linda could understandably have strong feelings about seeing Janine again, particularly because of the circumstances surrounding Mick’s disappearance. Janine, meanwhile, would be returning to a Walford that has moved considerably since she was last there.

Kellie has revealed that she actually decided to leave EastEnders more than a year ago. However, she agreed to extend her stay after discussions with Kate Oates and executive producer Ben Wadey because they already had a major storyline planned for Linda.

That detail makes the mystery surrounding Linda’s final chapter particularly interesting. Her departure has been planned well in advance, giving EastEnders plenty of opportunity to construct a substantial final story for a character who has been central to the programme since 2013.

The BBC has also teased that somebody with Linda’s history could hardly be expected to leave quietly.

Could that story reach its climax over Christmas and New Year?

It would certainly be fitting territory for Linda. Christmas has repeatedly played an important role in her story, from the Carter family years to Keanu’s death in The Queen Vic on Christmas Day 2023.

There is another major clue about the timeframe. Linda appeared in EastEnders’ flashforward to 1 January 2027, establishing that she remains part of the story heading into the New Year.

That does not tell us when Kellie’s actual final episode will air, and EastEnders has not announced Linda’s departure date. It does, however, leave open the possibility of her farewell becoming part of the programme’s major festive period.

Bringing Janine into that story would add another layer because of their unresolved history, but there are plenty of other directions EastEnders could take. Linda has connections stretching across Albert Square, and her final storyline does not necessarily have to revolve around an old enemy.

For now, the most exciting part is how much remains unknown. We know Kellie is leaving. We know Linda has a significant storyline ahead. We know she remains present around New Year 2027. What EastEnders has deliberately kept secret is what ultimately causes Linda Carter to say goodbye to Walford.

If Janine does cross her path before that happens, however, their history means EastEnders already has the foundations for one final explosive chapter.
